A vacation to Europe isn't something you say the day before the trip. That's something you book like a year before, so you can be excited about it and, most of all, so you can be prepared! Nevertheless, I didn't fight it. I mean come on, Europe, Greece! Besides, that's the even more perfect place to do nothing. Even though my parents forbid me to bring my laptop. I just loaded up my suitcase with books instead and made sure to create an awesome playlist on my phone. Problem solved.
We've just gone through all the security checks and was heading towards our gate. Me, my parents and my little brother Tom. It's reaaally early, like painfully early. Especially for me with my f'cked up sleeping schedule. I'd had tons of coffee though, but still my mood wasn't great at this point. Moody teenager, what a cliché huh?
"Do you think the others are at the gate?" My mom ask turning to my dad. Wait what, the others? Who are "the others"? The other people boarding the plane or is there something my parents haven't been talling me?
"Excuse me? The others? What are you talking about?" I ask suspiciously.
"You didn't tell her?" Mom ask my dad.
"I thouhgt I did." My dad say wrinkling his forhead looking at me. I just shake my head to tell him that no, he didn't tell me. I thought this was going to be a family vacation, like family only.
"Well, we're going to Greece with some work colleagues. The Johnsons and the Ryders, you know? We thought it would be great, specially for Tom to have someone his own age." Dad explained looking around at the same time trying to find our gate. "You don't mind do you?" He then ask looking at me.
"Whatever, it doesn't matter." I told him even though I was a little bummed about it. You see, other people means that I have to make an effort. Be polite, dress decent and not shut everyone off. But it should be OK if the kids are in Toms age. He's twelve, with means I don't have to socialize that much. Just aswer a few question from the grown ups, the basics.
"Look there're the Johnsons." Mom say as she waves to a women who's currently waving to us. We head in their direction. The Johnsons consist of a middle aged couple, that present themself as Frank and Elena, and their daughter Amanda, who seems to be around fourteen maybe fifteen. She's the opposite of everything I am and ever have been, if we're going to judge the book by it's cover that is. Her hair is blonde falling perfectly down her shoulders, and honestly I'm kind of jealous, my hair is a mess like always. She's wearing a pair of yoga pants and a blouse, in some popular brand that I don't know the name of, and a pair of sunglasses on her head with her phone in her hand and earpluggs in her ears. When I were in her aged, I was... I just shudder at the thought, heading towards a cafe to buy some coffee instead.
When I come back everyone has taken a seat, the adults talking among eachother, Amanda fiddling with her phone and my brother looking like he could kill himself out of boredom. I take a seat beside my mom drinking my coffee and just listening as they chatter on about things that aren't that interesting at all.
"Oh, there they are!" Frank suddenly burst out, making all of or head snap in the direction that his vocie is directed at. The Ryders I asume. All that I can see right now is a stressed out, again, middleaged couple, making their way towards us. All the other adults stand up to greet them with smiles and huggs. Tom stand aswell making his way to one of the Ryders sons i pressume. And I'm guessing that they already know eachother, because not even a minute passes before they sit shoulder to shoulder playing some game on a gameboy. So what do I do? I stay put in my seat awkwardly not sure what to do, I can't quite see anything besides the backs of the adults standing in a group still greeting eachother. So I can't really get a good look at the new people untill my mom calls me over.
"Emily, come and say hi!" Awkwardly I stand up and making my way over."This is our daughter Emily" She say sounding rather proud reaching out her arm towards me. I put on an, yes you guessed it, awkward smile reaching out my hand and shaking Katherine and James, the "new ones", hands.
"Well this is perfect, Jacob come here." Katherine say after shaking my hand, turning around to face her other son, apparently she has two. When she turn, she reveals a boy my age standing behind his parents. As he looks up I recognize him at once. He goes to my school, I don't know him, I don't think I've ever even talked to him. Isn't that just great? Sarcasm, oh sweet sarcasm.Jacob Ryder is a dark blonde soccer dude. Yet again I judge the book by it's cover, but honestly that's all I know about him from school. I think we have common friends. Like friends of mine, that acctually talk to boys like it isn't a big thing. Anyway, now it's his turn to shake all hands that the adults reach out to him and smile politlie, know the feeling bro.
"And this is Cara and George daughter Emily." Katherine say pointing towards me. Our eyes meet and I give him a tight-lipped smile.
"Yeah, we go to the same school, right?" He ask casually.
"Right." I nodd not having anything else to say about the matter.
"Well, isn't that wonderfull!" Katherine say enthusiastically. No Katherine, no it's not wonderfull. Jacob just nodd while I offer her a smile. She then turns to the other moms leaving us just standing there. After giving him another tight-lipped smile, and mumbling something about sitting down, I escape back to my coffee. Just glancing up long enough to see him sitting down pulling on his headphones again. I follow both his and Amandas example and dig up my own earphones from my bag. I got a feeling I will use them alot these upcoming three weeks.
