---The story will be told in Werner's POV!----

I grip Liesel's hand tightly as the train rumbles along, great plumes of smoke rising from it like grey clouds. I rarely get ill anymore, but the constant moving of the train sometimes unseats my stomach. Mama says I am weak, and who am I to argue with her? I'm a little Saukerl who'd probably die if he was ever left alone.

Liesel murmurs something in my ear, but I can barely hear her. "Ich kann sie nicht hören! I can't hear you!" I cry over the loud rumbling. Liesel yells, "We're almost there, Sie taube alte Fledermaus! You deaf old bat!" We giggle a bit and I yawn. "I'd like to go to sleep, Liesel."

Liesel shakes her head, not understanding me, and waves me away as if to say, Do whatever you want.

Liesel's hand slaps me harder. "Wake up, Werner!"

She's crying now, large fat tears rolling down her cheeks.

"T-they t-took Mama! T-they t-t-took her!" Her sobs scare me.

Liesel is a tough big sister. She always protected me from things. She was the closest thing to my heart, to be honest. And here she is, crying her head off on a train with no Mama.

"Who took her?" I say shakily.

"I don't know, you Dummkopf! We have to get out of here before..." Liesel trails off, looking behind me.

"Wer sind diese Kinder?" says a voice behind my back.

Of course. The conductor.
