"You might want to watch out folks", the news reporter said on the radio, "there is a 100% chance that there will be a tsunami near the east side of Nightvale. We are not sure yet but the power of the tsunami may cause it to flood the whole of Nightvale. So please, we wish for you to be safe out there. Whoever you are, stay on top of roofs and pray for your lives."
"I will be keeping you updated to ensure your safeties. Please keep your radios on and stay tuned for updates."
"The tsunami is halfway to shore. If you haven't already, you should: have some food or snacks with you, first aid, and anything you think you will be able to float with in case you get stranded in the water. You never know how long you will have until you are rescued. Remember, you are your first priority which means you should try to save yourself first before others."
"Please stay safe, the tsunami has reached shore and has already killed 17 people who were on shore doing research. I repeat, they were researchers, scientists, you should not let your curiosity drive you at the moment."
"The tsunami is now a fourth into Nightvale, please be on watch. It has killed over 100 people now."
"Wait, this isn't a normal tsunami.."
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THIS IS NOT A NORMAL TSUNAMI, I REPEAT THIS IS NOT A NORMAL TSUNAMI. THERE ARE SEVERAL SHARKS ON LAND. SEVERAL PEOPLE ARE DYING BY THE SECOND. PLEASE TAKE SHELTER. DO ANYTHING THAT WILL PREVENT THE SHARKS FROM GETTING YOU."
The reporter sighed.
"Over a thousand people have died. Whoever is still out there, please stay safe. Stay inside if you have to. The water level has gone down so it may be possible for you to take shelter. The wave is almost gone. From 1,232 feet it has dropped to 832feet. The water level is up to 432 feet for those of you near the shore. For those of you further out it is still too dangerous for you to step inside of your house for safety from the sharks. There are still sharks everywhere. 5,000 people have died."
"For the people closer to shore, the water level is approximately 320 feet. For the others it is still 800 feet. Keep above grounds and do not attempt to swim. There are still several sharks in the water."
Crack. The reporter looked over. There was an inch of water in the room. His eyes widened but it was too late. The glass and door gave in, allowing the water to fall all over him. Sharks were everywhere and the reporter screamed as the sharks ate his limbs one by one.
Crackle. There was static and the reporters voice was not over the radio anymore.
"I thought I told you to keep her inside!" Stephen yelled at Lukas, "And now because of you she's gone!"
"I'm sorry, I- I couldn't hold her back." Lukas said looking down at the water, it had risen to the level of his waist now.
"I don't care! Just leave."
"What? You're making me go out there when there's sharks everywhere? And it's flooded!"
"Go!"
"Just because your sister died. It wasn't even my fault."
"Yes it was, now go! I don't want to see you ever again. And it's not "just". She was my sister and you're just a friend."
"Ouch. That really hurt me. What about all those good times we had? We were friends since we were only babies!" Lukas said, "I care about your sister too you know. She was like my sister as well." Stephen looked down at his sisters body cradled in his arms.
"You know what? You're right, it shouldn't have been my sister. It should've been you." Lukas looked at his one true friend in disgust. Or at least he thought he was his friend. He was clenching his fists so hard that his hands started bleeding.
"I thought you were my friend. You were the only friend I had."
"That's not my fault. You're just that one kid that doesn't have any friends and should be ashamed of himself." The words felt so agonizing that Lukas actually fell back a little. But at that moment there was pounding on the door at the front. It sounded like hands were clawing at something. Trying to tear it open but failing. Then the door gave in and a lot of water rushed in. Along the current was a couple sharks.
"Run!" Lukas cried. Stephen didn't move so Lukas grabbed his sleeve and sprinted upstairs, shutting themselves in a room.
"Asshole." Stephen muttered.
"What do you mean. I just save your life."
"Like as if it matters anymore. My parents are dead and the only thing I had left was my sister, and because of you she's dead now!"
"Do you think we're in a situation to be fighting right now?" The current of the water or the sharks were banging on the door again. Stephen fought his way over the water to the window. He tried using his elbow to open the latch.
"What do you think you're doing?" Lukas asked. Stephen didn't answer. "I asked you a question." Lukas said, stepping towards him.
"Stop!" Stephen said breathing heavily. "If you take one more step towards me.. I- I- I will kill you." Frightened by his friends sudden out burst he took a step back. Stephen started hitting the latch harder and harder until it finally freed open. But by then the sharks had knocked the door over. They came in fast and grabbed onto Lukas' leg.
"Help! Please Stephen." he cried. Stephen looked back but shook his head and started moving out of the window. But then the other shark grabbed onto his leg making him lose his balance and slip back into the room. They were both flailing to stay above the water. Lukas kept yanking on his leg and finally pulled loose. A big chunk of his leg was gone and his eyes watered in pain. Though despite his pain he made his way over to the window and started pulling himself up the roof.
"Lukas! Don't leave me. Just forget the things I said earlier, I was just mad about my sisters death. Yeah, that's all. I'm sorry." Stephen said. His face was scrunched up in pain, and his eyes were squeezed shut preventing the water from spraying into his eyes. Lukas looked outside and looked back at Stephen. He doesn't deserve this, he thought, he doesn't deserve anything. Why should I do this for him? Lukas took a deep breath and went back into the room. He pulled on Stephens shirt and heard the agonizing sound of flesh ripping. Stephen yelled in pain. He limped on his one leg towards the window, holding onto Lukas for support. But at the window he threw Lukas back into the water and went towards the window to save himself. Lukas struggled in the water trying to get back to surface. He felt resentment, pain, and most of all broken.
The sharks went after Lukas as he took a deep breath finally surfacing. Seeing the sharks come at him he started throwing anything he could find in the water at them. Once he got to the window again Stephen was pulling himself on the roof.
"Stephen, pull me up." he said, wincing. Instead he kicked Lukas with is one leg trying to make him lose his grip. The water was rising fast and his clothes were soaked, weighing him down. His hair was matted to his face and his eyes stung from the salty water. All the water he had accidentally drank caused his throat to sting. Without thinking, Lukas grabbed Stephen's leg and pulled him down. His head banged into the gutter leaving a huge dent, blood gushing out of his head. He "threw" Stephen into the room, the sharks hurried towards the body and ripped him apart. The last sounds he heard was an ear splitting scream from Stephen and flesh being ripped apart.
