Elizabeth rolled over in her lonely bed and slammed her hand on the alarm clock that screeched like a chicken in her half-awake ears. She had thick brown hair that reminded you of fallen acorns that had been silked with the first rain of autumn that covered her face as the sun beat down through her blinds. As she rubbed her eyes she looked over at her alarm, "10:05 am" it read it big green writing. She was working 11-7 pm which was the middle shift at her job; a small 24/7 hour restaurant right off the highway in her small home town. It was the worst shift but brought in the most money. She worked the lunch shift with 2 others who sectioned the tables and during the dinner rush, she was the only server.  She worked in the type of restaurant that while everyone hated the food and the place had a terrible reputation, people still came. Elizabeth loved her job, only because the people that she worked with for 4 years, had become her family and her regulars had become friends.

She rubbed her big brown eyes lied in bed, looking up at the ceiling -she grunted and debated if she should call in late and go back to sleep or work her full shift. She weighed the pros and cons and finally put her feet on the purple fuzzy carpet that flowed out from under her bed into the rest of her bedroom. Elizabeth lived in a tiny studio apartment with her dog, Nadia who was a dalmation and Terrier mix. Elizabeth loved Nadia more than anything and Nadia loved Elizabeth just the same if not more. The two did everything together, whatever Elizabeth ate, so did Nadia. Elizabeth watched tv, Nadia was cuddled up next to her. Elizabeth had a dream of saving enough money to go to college, get a good job, and find a house for her and Nadia. She had her rent paid up 3 months in advance and $2,000 saved for her tuition. Elizabeth grew up poor, her mother worked 3 jobs just to get by, living paycheck to paycheck she did everything she could to provide for Elizabeth and her brother James. Elizabeth was still living paycheck to paycheck, picking up extra shifts at work just to get by with all the savings she was having to do. She kept pushing because she knew one day she would make it to success all she had to do was work for it.

As she got ready for work she prayed that it wasn't so busy today, she was a great waitress but sometimes it can be tiring dealing with the rude people, lousy tippers, and the creepy old men that would just stare at her and her beauty. Elizabeth was a very attractive woman, she could have any man that she wanted, but of course, no man was good enough to be able to distract her from college and how hard she was working to get there. She was about to let anyone get in the way of her dreams, her eye was on the prize and she could just feel how great it would be to finally not have to struggle if she could just get to the finish line. She grabbed her blue work shirt and threw it on, a pair of tight pants with small patched holes in them, and her off-brand converse slip-resistant shoes.

"Bye sweet girl, I'll be home later with work food" She said to Nadia as she grabbed her keys and walked out the door. It was a constant routine, she would bring the two of them food from work home, saved money and it made Nadia happy.

As soon as she pulled into the parking lot she knew it was going to be a busy day, cars in all the parking spaces she had to park behind the restaurant. She sat there for a minute thinking of how great it would be to just be able to sleep the day away, she could already tell this 8-hour shift would feel like 15. She grabbed her apron out of the back seat of her old beat-up Toyota Camry and walked in the back door. Her manager, Amanda sat in her office in the back and looked up as she walked in.

"How was your day off yesterday, Elizabeth?" Amanda questioned.

"It was good" She replied as she walked into her office as she was pulling her hair up and looked up at the security cameras that showed the whole dining room "Has it been this busy all morning?"

Amanda nodded her head indicating yes as another server walked into the back "I'm so glad you're here!" She exclaimed "Can you take table 3 and 5?"
