This is just an short explanation of the true meaning of this story, so I repeat you do NOT have to read this to enjoy the story.
This story is actually meant to be a "behind the scenes" for the christian life, and a lot of the monsters and creatures are meant to be metaphors for problems and struggles in real life. The "Wizardry" and "Magic" in this is supposed to be Christians using the strength of God to get through spiritually dangerous situations.
The characters all have backstories in this world too:
Jackal was a bodyguard for some higher-ups in his city before he discovered the truth about the darkness. He chose to seek out answers to some of his questions and in doing so, he got kicked out of his city.
Luna was an assassin and a thief. She lived in a fairly small town and discovered the darkness when a bunch of monsters attacked and destroyed her town. She noticed some wizards trying to fight them off and decided to learn some more about this light that could defeat the monsters.
Tubin grew up knowing about the light, but had never really believed just how dangerous the darkness could be until his father died and shadows took over his home.
Ty had discovered the light for himself, in a book he picked up while traveling with a caravan. He became overconfident and went up against one of the monsters on his own and barely survived.
