Time stood gradually still, frozen in place and yet at the same time it moved at an unbelievingly fast pace. Avah often seems to question time, as she sees time as a mockery daring her to question her sanity by waiting for every ant agonizingly painful second to pass. And questioning her sanity was something she did ever so often, but she manages to find ways to justify her thoughts and or actions.
The court room itself, looked exactly like one would expect from a television program or movie. The Judges bench was fully furnished with Bolivian Rosewood wood, as well as the court reporter and witness stand. The rest of the courtroom from the court clerks’ desk, defendant and plaintiffs’ table and the jury box was furnished in Birch wood. Finishing off the idiosyncratic look, was a Anglo American Drop Dial wall clock C1910 which was hung up centered in the middle of the wall behind the Judge’s bench.
Looking around the courtroom Avah could see the tension building up. The tension became unbarring as it seemed that the tension in the courtroom started to grow as heavy as fog threatening to cut out ones air supply. Avah felt that breathing had become a great difficulty as her lungs were giving into the fog and its’ sinister ways. Slowly Avah was drifting further and further into the fog but before she completely succumbed to the abyss, she heard the voice of the 50 year old something judge begin to speak.
“By the order of the court, the accused Keasan Lennox is found guilty of First Degree murder of the late Merrick Martins. He is hereby acclaimed to the death penalty. Further information regarding dates will be discussed as of yet. The court is now adjourned”, that being the judges’ final statement before he drew the infamous gavel and brought it down hard on the table.
The sound of the loud banging was bouncing off the walls creating an ear itching echo throughout the courtroom. Avah could not fully comprehend the news that she just heard. After a few moments, the words’ of the judge began to register and it soon felt like a large dark cloak fell upon her. The cloak prevented her from speaking or hearing anything. It was as if the cloak was a soundproof protective bubble. Soon her vision was starting to blur as tears welled up in her eyes. Her failed attempts at wiping away tears were completely tarnished. She then thought that there was no point in letting the tears build up so she let them fall freely.
After about a minute she averted her gaze to Keasan who was meeting her with her tear filled gaze. As she was looking at him, her heart grew into tight knobs. This feeling that she felt now was a feeling she knew all too well but for different reasons.
Keasan was wearing the typical orange jumpsuit one would wear when imprisoned. His hands were both bind together with handcuffs. The look on his face as it is now would be imbedded in her memory forever. What was once upon a time sparkling life filled eyes were replaced with a dull and a dead pair instead? Watching him in his current state made Avah want to cry even louder.
She stood on the same spot frozen as she watched them dragging her love away. The two police officers taking him away, both wore a face of mock. Keasan looked over his shoulder and gave Avah one last glance with a sad smile on his face. Avah didn’t bother returning the smile; she just stood there watching as they took him away.
A few seconds later which felt like much longer did Avah then only realize that she was staring at a blank spot. She turned around with which she saw that the courtroom was almost empty. She did not pay any attention to what people were saying and just stood as stiff as a board when people came to hug her.
How could she think of anything else? There was only one thought that kept repeating itself… ‘Keasan is being sentenced to death’.
