"MARRY? Ha! He can't force me to marry anyone! He can't do that! Can he do that?"
There was NO way I was marrying Harry. I mean, it's not like I was marrying Carlos or anything, but no way in HELL was I marrying Harry.
"Calm down. He can't make you marry anyone. He just WANTS you to," She said, not looking at me at all.
"Mom, I don't like him! Can't dad tell?"
"Obviously not. Everyone else can tell except your father and Harry," She said. The only people I wanted to realize it were clueless. Great.
I sighed.
"Apparently he has a surprise for you tonight! That's all he would say," She said.
"Daddy?" I asked.
"Harry," She answered.
"Well I gotta surprise too. Never seeing me again," I mumbled.
"If you absolutely HAVE to break up with him, be nice. Please," She said.
I nodded and then ran upstairs and decided to start planning how I'd break up with Harry this evening. Maybe I could just not show up or be really unattractive or mean or something. I put on a dress my father bought me that I absolutely hated. It was so unflattering and ugly. But it was modest, and that's probably why he got it in the first place.
I'd finally decided that I'd break it to him nicely once he took me home. I wasn't going to be mean about it.
I heard the doorbell rang and mom yelled upstairs "REBECCA, HARRY'S HERE!"
I ran downstairs and he kissed me, and I tried my best to not cringe. I turned around to say goodbye to my mother, and she gave me a look that said 'be nice'.
Harry took me to a restaurant and sweet talked me the whole night. "You're so beautiful.", "I love you!", "I'm so happy I met you."
I just wanted to staple his lips shut. I would nod and offer the occasional "Aw, sweetie," if it felt necessary. At the end of the date, he drove me home and walked me to the door.
"I had a great time tonight, Rebecca," he said and leaned in for a kiss.
I turned away.
"What's wrong?" He asked and laughed nervously.
"Listen Ha-" I started, but he cut me off.
"Let me tell you something first. I love you, Rebecca. A lot," he started again.
He always called me by my full name. I hated it.
"And I know our meeting was scheduled and it's not fate or anything romantic. But it happened, and I'm glad," He paused and I rolled my eyes.
"That's great but-" I began again, but I was once again cut off.
"Please let me finish." He took a deep breath and got down on one knee.
I almost fell over. He can't be proposing, can he?
"I am so bad at this. ... I feel like we are meant to be together. Don't you?" He paused, but I said nothing. "And I feel sparks every time we kiss. You're just so....you. And I can't wait any longer to spend the rest of my life with you. So... What I'm trying to say is... will you mar-"
I couldn't take in anymore.
"Harry, I can't do this. I'm breaking up with you. I am so sorry," I said quickly.
I opened the door and went inside, leaving Harry on the porch with nothing but his ring and the swan shaped tin foil left overs we'd gotten.
I peeked through the window and saw him crying. He threw the ring box on the ground and walked away, looking back every so often. I felt horrible about what I did, but there was no way I could marry him.
"How'd it go?" My mother asked me. I turned around to face her.
"Well I did it. I broke up with him," I said.
"How'd he take it?"
"Well...he was asking me to marry him, and I stopped him before he could get the words. And then he cried..." I said.
"He proposed?"
"Well yeah..." I looked down. I knew my father was in the other room, listening.
"Well I hope he's okay," She said, and walked away.
Mom was no help in this, and daddy wouldn't support me either. I was alone in all this, besides Carlos, of course. I looked towards the room my father was in. He had a pissed off expression on his face.
"D-daddy?" I asked, slowly walking into the room.
"You broke up with Harry?" He asked, never moving his eyes from his book.
"Y-yes, daddy. I don't like him. You know that," I said.
"Doesn't matter. He was perfect for you! He had a bright future. I can't believe you made such a stupid mistake." He shook his head in disapproval.
"I'm sorry," I muttered. He mumbled something I couldn't quite hear, not that I wanted to know what he now thought of me.
My mother walked into the room to remind dad of his meeting with the mayor tomorrow.
I was quick to walk out the room and ran upstairs to call Carlos, ignoring the hushed bickering between my parents.
