Neverending

Neverending. Towering trees enveloped me, shrouding my vision. No matter which way I ran, there'd always be more. More branches snagging at my clothes, more trees blocking my path.

Neverending. There were never any clearings and the sun never rose. The night was the conductor to my torture. It was like I was blindfolded, every direction looked the same.

Neverending. My feet ached as if I'd run a marathon three times over... But it had only been an hour. I thought. My heart pounded in my chest, threatening to escape and leave me alone.

Neverending. Deafening silence echoed around me, drowning out any trace of life. Time was slow. Slower than it should be. Was I in a bubble? Far away from the rest of the world? It didn't matter.

Neverending. How did I get here? How could I escape? Nothing seemed to work. No matter how hard I tried, I was trapped.

Neverending. There it was. The edge of the vast, neverending forest. I ran as fast as I could. Would I be able to outrun it this time? No. My vision became blurry and emptiness encased me. Falling.

Neverending. I opened my eyes. Back in the maze of trees. I made a mark on the tree closest to me, alongside the previous eighty, and began to run.

Neverending.

Not my fault.

Neverending.

Not my fault.

Neverending.

But it was my fault. I had pulled the trigger. Killed that innocent woman.

Neverending. This was the price to pay. A life for sanity.

Neverending. This was my hell. My neverending hell.
