it's a date (volleyball AU)

Adora's POV

We were on the last round. My heart was pounding against my chest as I positioned myself a few feet away from the line that separated the outside from the playing area. This was it, either I fluke it, or we win this. A loud whistle interrupts my inner thoughts and I get in position. Breathe in, breathe out. I focus on the right edge of the opposing teams section. It is vaguely protected, and that girl's stance is off.

I start to walk forward, and with a jump, I send the ball flying directly to my aimed spot. The aforementioned girl manages to unflatteringly keep the ball off the floor and falls into an awkward position. I ready myself in the back of the field for any potential turn around. The tension is high amongst the entire gym, there's people cheering with excitement, and others silenced in anticipation.

The captain of our rival team, my ex Catra, successfully salvages the ball from the throw of the previous girl, and sets it for another player, who skillfully passes the ball to a supposed empty spot. Perfect, I grin to myself internally. She fell straight into my trap, without a second thought, I dive in to save the ball, and raise it up in the air so my teammates can continue the game. My friend Perfuma quickly gets a hold of the ball and sets it for Glimmer to make an attack, and she does so.

Before I could properly see what had happened, the whole gymnasium broke out in a giant cheer. "Brightmoon High has won the Interschool Championship for the second year in a row! Let's hear it for the team!"

We won. We won, and I get to rub it on Catra's face.

As we say our good games to the other team, I spot Catra at the beginning of the line. We start to make our way to each other and I grin as I pass by her. She rolls her eyes back at me in a playful manner.

After the match is over, the whole team decides to have a pizza party to celebrate our victory. As we're making our way back to the locker room, out of the corner of my eye I catch Catra glancing at me not-so-subtly. "I'll be right back guys" I say back to the team as I make my way to the feline girl.

"Tough match am I right?" Is what i'm greeted by, "You've really changed since you left The Horde. I mean it in a good way, really. You seem to have... grown." She points out the obvious, as I slightly hover over her.

"I guess you can say that, how are things back there anyways? I'd like to think they aren't that bad as you were promoted to captain of the team." I say while slightly puffing up my chest, which made the brunette chuckle.
"Yeah, its nice and all to be in charge of what everyone gets to do, it can be pretty fun. Sometimes I miss having you by my side, ordering everyone around. Even Kyle who isn't part of the team" She says with a hint of melancholy in her glance.

"Those were some good times, I hope you keep bossing him around"
"Sure do", She replied instantly.

We stood together leaning against the wall for a while in an awkward silence. I still remember the day I told Catra I would be leaving Fright High to come to Brightmoon. She didn't take the news in very well. After all, both schools have a long history of rivalry. I like to think that maybe, just maybe, Catra and I could turn it into more playful banter than right out loathing between the two schools.

"We should hang out sometime, you know, like old times" Catra suddenly said, with a slight stutter in her wording.

"That'd be awesome!", I happily replied, "Would you like to go and eat some junk food? Maybe we could take a walk in the park, with Melog of course, or maybe we could drive to our old spot?"

"What if we just do all of them?" Catra asked, more confidently this time. "It's a date", I stated.

I watched as her face turned into a crimson color, and she immediately looked away trying to hide it. Maybe things could go back to the way they used to be.

"It's a date"

Oop it's another chapter. It's pretty short because Ireally didn't know what to do with it, I'm not very good at this so don't roast me lol. I promise I'll try to make another one-shot within a week that isn't like, a high school AU. I'm just extremely rusty with writing so I'm testing the waters again with things that are more familiar with me. Thanks for sticking around for this oneeeee. Luv y'all
