It's day one out of 365. I have 365 days to tell a story. But it's not a story that I thought of in my head, or a story from the past. It's my story. My story from now, day one. I have no idea how this is going to plan out, I just need to be free, and that is why I am doing this.
I have been sat in my bedroom for about two hours now, just waiting. Waiting for my mother to walk through that door and wish me a happy new year like she does every year. I stare down at the scars on my arms. I mustn't let my depression get the better of me – that's one of my resolutions.
"Good morning Natalia," my mother says, bursting through the door. I cover my arms quickly to hide the broken memories. "Happy new year sweetie."
"Happy new year Mama," I reply with a beaming smile. We share a hug before she leaves for work.
Next will be the text from my long term boyfriend, Adam, and the one from my best friend Oscar, both saying the same thing. I reply to both of them as I usually do and finally get up. I dress in my casual clothes for I am meeting with Oscar today.
"Hey Talia!" he calls when I reach his gate. I give him a hug and we walk towards the park. Oscar is a beautiful human being. With dark eyes and hair and that tall muscular body; it's shocking that he hasn't got a girlfriend yet.
Whereas, my Adam is the perfect blonde hair and blue eyes combination. He makes my heart melt every time I see his face.
My Adam. Heart melting. Heart stabbing. Heart breaking jerk. Not my Adam.
"Natalia, are you okay?" Oscar asks, turning to where I am looking. "Oh."
I let a tear roll down my cheek as I continue to stare. We had been together for six years and he does this. I wipe my face and start pacing towards him, heart pumping with adrenaline and anger. He sees my face and gasps. You'll be doing more than gasping. I rip the girl away from him and punch him square on the nose. A small smile creeps to my lips as blood starts to trickle from his nostrils.
"You're welcome to him," I smile at the gobsmacked girl. Gobsmacked in more ways than one because I slap her straight across the face.
Oscar guides me away and we both fall into fits of giggles.
"I should feel upset but I haven't felt happier in my life!" I squeal, falling into my best friend's lap. He laughs and strokes my hair like he did when we were kids.
"Now I don't have to share you with that scumbag," Oscar chuckles. "Just with your mum now."
I smile and kiss him on the cheek before rising to my feet. I pull him up too and take him back to my house.
"Talia! Stop him! It tickles!" Oscar squirms as the cat licks his feet. It looked grim but so funny. I pull up my sleeves and grab the cat away from him.
"How's it going with that so far?" he asks, pointing to my broken memories.
"Oscar, it's only been one day. I'm fine." That was true this time. I had no reason to be upset today. My best friend is here beside me and I am constantly smiling. Considering my six year relationship has just broken down, I'm doing pretty well.
Maybe this year will be a "New year, new start."
