My head swam. I needed to get out of there as fast as possible. I tiptoed downstairs.
"Why are you doing this, Karen? Abandoning us?" shouted my dad.
"It's for the best, Robert!" shouted my mom. I blocked out the noise. Whatever happened, I needed to get out of there as fast as possible. All I thought was run away, run away, run away.
"Nev? What kept you?" said my brother, Oliver. Ollie, as I called him.
"I'm sorry Ollie-" I began, but he motioned for me not to go any further. It wasn't worth the risk if our parents heard us. He motioned me towards the door. I followed him and we both ran off into the night.
"I'm beginning to rethink this, Ollie." I said in a low voice as we ran away from our house.
"Don't." was all he said. Then we ran. We ran until we couldn't run anymore.
"I'm so tired, Ollie." I complained. I saw a car drive near us. Oh no. It was my mom, drunk and disheveled. She lunged at me and hissed.
"Why'd you leave, Nevaeh? Oliver? You're betraying this family." she whispered. Oliver grabbed a stone from the ground and chucked it at her head. She fell to the ground. He grabbed my hand and pulled me into the car.
"You barely just earned your driver's license!" I hissed.
