Yes. Yes. My life was going to be great. 1 am I sat in my room staring at a pale envelope vaguely lit by an almost burnt out candle, Nirvana loudly jammed into my small ears. This decides my future. University of Virginia or a life time supply of staying with my jackass father. I won't be like him. Doesn't matter if I get in or not.... I repetitively try to convince myself that getting in doesn't decide my future, but it does.
A new song comes over my Pandora station something I normally don't listen to. It's soft and sweet. A woman's voice signs the lyrics, in the morning when you wake up I like to believe you are thinking of me. I'm hooked already. As the song progresses she talks about sleeping in a guys tee shirt. It's weird but it's cool, definitely my type. This is my good luck song I decide.
I slip open the envelope with my thumb. Fuck. A paper cut. Wow luck is already on my side.
Dear Charlie Davies,
It is with great pleasure that I write to offer you admission to the University of Virginia and to invite you to join the first-year class in the College of Arts and Sciences. You should take great pride in receiving this invitation; more than 28,980 students applied for the 3,485 places in this fall's entering undergraduate class. Your inclusion in this group is a testament to your hard work and superior academic performance as well as the personal qualities that distinguish you from your peers.A loud gasp fades into several heavy tear drops rolling down my cheek. I did it.
