On the Eve of December the twelfth, five years after the age of the beast, Genesis lay asleep in her room at the Paudith Castle.  The Winter Princess was fast asleep in her room on the fifth floor of the Northern tower.  She was just seven years old, but already the lives and responsibilities of an entire people were weighing on her.  As soon as her parents thought she was of proper age, she would be coroneted as the Queen of Areladus and within a week she would be married to Louis the Third, the King of Paudith.  Their kingdoms had already been allies since the dawn of the region, but for the first time since the New Dawn, the heirs of Paudith and Areladus were so close in age and of opposing genders, a plan to make their alliance perfect and absolute.  The two could marry and the Kingdoms would form into one.  Their parents had arranged for this since Genesis was born and both children were being groomed to be rulers of not only their own kingdoms, but each other’s.  The two had grown up together and had become fast friends and playmates.

Their father’s had been such as well; groomed to be allies from the days they were born.  They traded off and spent much time in each other’s kingdoms, learning the ways and cultures of the other’s people.  They had been staying in the Kingdom of Paudith for the birth of the King and Queen’s second child.  But the Queen could not be helped.  The Queen of Paudith was lost the morning of December ninth.  And King Louis the Second wept.  None had ever seen a King as heartbroken as was His Majesty Louis.  His son, at the age of ten, was not- and could not- be fully aware of what had happened to his mother.  Simply, that she was gone and was no longer there.  Death, the noblest act and the greatest act that he had always read and heard about in stories never happened to anyone he knew.  Specifically not his mother, who seemed too young and full of life to simply be…gone.  In the shadow of his mother’s death, Louis clung even more to Genesis.  The young boy followed around his younger counterpart as though he was a young puppy and she fed him table scraps.

And it was on the Eve of December the twelfth that Louis the Third knocked on young Genesis’ door.  The princess stirred in her bed and sat up, the door opening enough for the young prince to poke his head in.  “Louis…?”  Genesis whispered as she rubbed her crystal green eyes with her hand.  “What’s wrong?”

“Its thundering…” the young boy explained hesitantly, “and I had a nightmare.”

Genesis gave him a warm smile and patted the bed next to her.  It had become a reoccurring pattern; the prince Louis would have a nightmare, and where he used to curl up in bed next to his mother, he now would seek refuge with Genesis.  Louis shut the door behind him and run to Genesis.  “Thank you, Genesis.”  He said quietly as the Princess scooted over.
