Chapter 1
Candice's POV
I awoke to the sound of my pet bird, Jerry squawking at the leaves blowing in wind. Sometimes I wish I could be Jerry and have wings and fly to the ends of the earth and see everything. Living in a village in South Africa changes your life completely. My origin is South African and American. Apparently I have a cousin his name is Charlie and I've never met him before but since I'm going to be in Minnesota for the four years I am high school I finally get to meet him! I wonder if he will like me? What if he hates me?
I walked down the long spiral staircase that leads into the living room and then into the dining room. Once I had reached the dining room I sat down in my regular seat. Our maid, Maria came in my regular yogurt and berries with honey and my glass of milk.
"Thank you." I replied in African. Maria is very lovely soul but she couldn't afford to go to a university and study to be a doctor so my parents pay for her and offer her a room, food and studies in our house. Her payment is to be our maid. I have a lot of hope for Maria.
Today I am moving and I'm going to miss this place so much. From the smells of the grass or the hot African sun on my skin. But the one thing I will the most is my mum and dad. They are kind souls who support me and Maria through everything. Support is one of the main things in a relationship.
Once I was finished with my yogurt Maria came and took it and I walked upstairs to get dressed. I don't know what the weather in Minnesota is like but my Aunt told me over the phone that it's cold and it snows. I hope it snows when I'm there it must be spectacular. So ahead of time I bought a couple of winter coats and many stylish pea coats. Also I got boots and heels suitable for the snow and cold winter.
Of course in Africa we don't have coat stores so I had to order through a catalog.
I walked up the spiral staircase to my room my room looked naked besides my light blue walls. My parents shipped all of my stuff ahead of time to Charlie's mother. She told us that we don't need to ship the bed because the dorms had a bed for me.
I grabbed my dress that looks like a shirt and skirt. It's jean on top and ties in the front and has a cream color skater skirt attached. Then I grabbed my chunky heeled combat boots and my black handbag. My hair is naturally curly and wavy. Last week I decided to do the ends blonde and ombré it into my brunette locks.
"Candice the cab is here." My mother yelled from downstairs. I walked up to Jerry's cage and grabbed it and walked down the stairs. My dad took Jerry and put him in his kennel cage.
"So I guess this is it." I said hugging my mum and then dad.
"No it is not I will buy Vogue magazine and watch you on the Telly and call you." She said hugging me.
"Also we will see you at the end of the year." My dad said. Wait? What about winter and spring break.
"Wait daddy what about the two breaks?" I asked.
"Well..." He began talking about how expensive me moving is and then I stopped him.
"I understand just call me when ever." I said. It actually felt like a ton of brick hit me in the ribs and then I was run over by a truck.
Then I went to Maria. I stared at her for a couple of seconds then I hugged her. I whispered in her ear 'I have so much hope for you.'
Maria opened the door and the hot African sun hit my face. I put on my retro leopard sunglasses to protect my ocean blue eyes. My mum brought my carry on bags and luggage and put in the back on the the limo . I opened the limo door and hopped in. Jerry's kennel cage was next to me and so was my purse.
After everything was packed in the trunk the driver started the engine. It roared to life and he stepped on the gas. Soon we where head towards the airport. We drove past fields of high grass and many other small villages.
Soon after thirty minutes we arrived at the airport. The limo driver pulled us in to the drop-off area and opened the door for me. I carefully stepped out and looked around. My first time flying I thought in the back of my head.
My driver took out my luggage and placed it beside me. Jerry's kennel cage next to my feet and my handbag in my left hand.
"Thank you." I told the driver and handed him a fifty dollar bill and rolled my luggage into the airport. The first I was going to do is get Jerry into the kennel on the plane. I stored bird food for him in his cage but I gave him medicine that made him sleep for about twelve hours so he would probably wouldn't eat it anyway.
I walked to the back of the line and waited for a long time to get Jerry in the plane's kennel. Finally I was next. I told the woman the flight and all the other information she needed to know. Then I handed her the cage, which she gladly took.
After that I walked to get my luggage checked and checked for drugs and such. I walked through the metal detectors and then to the seats and waited for the flight to board. Soon I got hungry and bored. I found a little diner in the food area and sat a table.
As my food was being prepared I remembered that my aunt sent me a letter and two photos of Charlie and herself. Something caught my eye about Charlie he looked so familiar. Where did I see him before?
I finished my salad quite fast and payed then I got up and left. Soon after five minutes my flight was called. I walked to the terminal handed the woman my ticket and walked trough the terminal to the plane. I stepped in and a lot of men and boys where looking at me. Was something wrong , did I have something in my teeth?
Then someone wolf-whistled behind me and it clicked. They think I'm hot. I laughed a little at the thought. Then I found my seat right near the window. The fasten seat belt sign came on and I buckled myself in and put a piece of gum in my mouth so my ears don't pop. Then I took out my Walkman and put on a Madonna song and then was consumed by darkness.
