It played in rewind over and over, her piercing voice in through one ear out through the other. My best friend, who I dearly hate but love, ranting about her favorite bands. The same one she had told me this morning. I look up for a second to watch the birds fly by just as I do every day during lunch. How free they are, and how wind carries them away from everyday life.
The alarming screeching of the school bell goes off and my brain restarts. I pop my ear buds in, start up playlist 'study' and walk to my last class of the day. Heys and hellos flying across the room until the shushing was overbearing.
"Okay guys take out last nights homework..." the teacher beamed and by then I tuned out.
When the bell finally rang signalling school to be out, I met my group of friends just outside the school lines. The wind picks up and rustles my black skater skirt, prickling my cold bare legs. Walking down the road with two of my friends, one whistles as another lights up a cigarette.
"Babe lung cancer isn't pretty" the whistler chastised.
"What you never read the fault in our stars?" Ms. cigarettes spat.
It continued like that for another 5 minutes... You know those days you just hate everything and everyone? You wonder what it would be like outside of the route we set everyday? Our whole life consists of preparing for the text stage of death and working to do what? Spend another 5 years retired not being able to do anything but sit and eat cups of fruit? Its nauseating to think about.
I yell my goodbyes to my lovely yet troubled friends and turn off into a parking lot about half a mile away from the school. I park kinda far away so I don't have to deal with teen drivers being stupid and adult driving getting angry and racing off screaming profane words.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy profanity, its one of my many hobbies. But when adults yell profane words to chastise your profanity its quite an easy way to irritate me. Such as most things.
I get in my car after fighting with the door handle and get the key in the ignition.
Driving is another one of those many hobbies I told you about. Cranking the radio up to some kickass song I cant remember the title of and backing out of the parking lot. On my way I hit every stop light of course because days like these just always get better.
I finally pull in to my little apartment I share with my sister Lennox and pug Daisy. Just us three living here. Its been like that for a year or so now, after my dad bit it from cancer. My mom had left us when we were young so not many memories of her scent or voice, just pictures of her beautiful fake smile. I miss her... Remembering little bits doesn't lose the feeling of love for your own mother it just clouds it.
"LENNOXXXX ARE YOU HOME?!?!?!?!" I shout at her from the kitchen.
Lennox is 20 now and I turned 18 about 3 weeks ago.
"YES WHAT DO YOU WANT" Lennox screeched from inside her room
"A HUG FROM MY BIG SISSY" I cooed.
"well you are just going to have to wait until im done talking one the phone now aren't you."
"Fineee" I wined.
Opening the fridge a beautiful scent radiated from the top shelf... fried chicken! Lennox's fried chicken is always my favorite. That means she has bad news because she only makes it as a bribe, just perfect. I was in a bad mood to start with how bad can it be anyways...
Lennox walked in putting the phone down on the table. She leaned up against the kitchen counter and stared out the window for 3 seconds, then bounced back into reality.
"Sit." she gestured.
Her and I sat at our brown rounded kitchen table. Me sitting across from her.
"I see you made your fried chicken.. Whats the bad news." I said
"I... I dont know how to say this bu-" She started before I cut her off.
"Get to it please. Just get to the point how bad can this be."
"Im moving in with my boyfriend next week." She said with a sigh.
It took me a minute to process what she had said and the volume of its destruction. That would mean I would live alone... I would have to get a full time job and still finish my last year of high school?! This feels like when mom left us... Like she is leaving us all over again. All I did was stare at her in disgust. Betrayal seeped out of my stares and filled the room.
"You barely know this guy?! I don't even remember his damn name and you're going to go live with him?! What so you are just going to forget about me. Like everyone does huh? like mom did..." I scowled.
"Now don't put it like that I just w-" I cut her off.
"NO you know what im done. Just leave I don't want you here anyways" I sat up so quickly my chair flew against the kitchen cabinets making a 'CLINK!' noise.
I grabbed my wallet and car keys opening the door and slamming it shut. The arm was colder then it was before and I hadn't grabbed my jacket before I left. Getting in my car I spun the heating dial full blast and backed out the drive way. I drive fast down the high way and onto an in designated forest path. 2 miles down a cop car was parked with a guy inside drinking coffee. What an interesting place for a cop car to be considering its in the middle of nowhere.
"Miss please pull your car off to the side." The cop had yelled after rolling his window down half way.
I cursed under my breath and pull over to the side. Rolling down my window and grabbing license and registration from my glove box. I look up to see a short cop with brown and grey short hair, a mustache, and oddest of all a scarred slash through his left eyebrow down to his lip and through his left eye.
"Do you know why I pulled you over?" he questioned.
"No considering I did nothing wrong." I said.
"Miss can you please step out of the car"
"why? What is this I did nothing wrong" I grabbed my license he had handed back to me.
"Have you been drinking this evening?" He opened the car door.
"No of course not im only 18. Are you seriously drug testing me."
"I must insist ma'am" He said
I stepped out of the car and began to walk in a straight line. As I was almost finished he came up behind me and grabbed me by the shoulders.
"Get off of me!" I screamed.
In a split second I spun around and nailed him in the jaw. He staggered backwards and came running at me. He pulled out a syringe filled with red liquid. Grabbing me by the head he jabs the needle into my neck and whispers something while the world fades into black
"Test subject 13, injection dose number one, at 7:27 pm...3..2..1"
And I am consumed with sleep.
