Once we got back home, it was time for me to move out of the hospital. Six months had gone by quickly. I still had to come back for chemo and my up coming surgeries. But I couldn't forget what it was like living there with Evangeline. She was still living there because well, she was nearing the end. Her dad stayed until it was time for her to go.
"I'm going to miss my room neighbor." She sniffed.
"I'm going to miss you." I said sadly. She hugged me tightly. I wasn't going to be able to see Evie as much as I was before. I think it hurt us knowing that.
"I forgot, we need a Polaroid together!" She smiled.
"You mean the one that ripped through my eyes the first night I was here?" I said. She laughed and gave Gina the Polaroid. Evangeline put her arms around my waist and I put mine over her shoulders because of how tiny she was compared to me. I leaned my head on hers and smiled. Gina took the photos that, yet again, ripped through my pupils like fire. I only saw black dots. Evangeline grabbed the camera from Gina and shook the film.
"That's a keepa!" She smiled.
I gave her another hug. A tight hug. I hated moving out. It felt like we were breaking up or something dramatic. I still had six months left of chemotherapy. There was a very high possibility she wasn't going to be around within the next six months.
I hadn't been home in a while. I sat on bed, thinking to myself how missed hanging out with Evie already. Being back there was weird. I had settled everything back in when someone rang the doorbell.
"I got it!" I shouted.
I open the door and was shocked to see my brother, Garret. I turned around to look at my mom and she wiped her hands on a dish towel. She walked up to Garret and hugged him. The same woman and child stood behind him.
"Come in." My mom said softly while smiling. The woman smiled and hugged her. My brother nodded his head yes and held out his hand to shake. I stood there looking at his hand for about five seconds until giving in. He brought me in for a hug. We all sat on the couch and talked. Garret wanted his own life so when he was deployed to Hawaii, he met Naia. Once his term was up, he stayed and together they had my three year old nephew, Kai. He had forgotten about his life with us. He mentioned he heard when I got sick and came to see me at Saint Bernards. But he couldn't seem to make himself walk into the hospital after what happened to Everly, his ex-girlfriend. She died during surgery from a car accident. He mentioned how Naia and Kai changed him. He wanted to be apart of our lives again and we did too. So we gave him another chance.
We spent hours talking and catching up about the past four years. I told him all about Evangeline and how she changed me. Then he mentioned how they spoke when I was in my room for those three days. He said and I quote, "she's really great at convincing. That's why I'm here." Without Evangeline, my brother would probably never have came. I thank her for that. I thank my best friend for everything she had done.
I enter my room once again, missing that hospital smell. Evangeline wasn't a big fan of phones. Now that I think about, I don't think had one. I never truly saw her with a phone. Maybe once or twice. She depended on paper and pens for memories. If I was still at the hospital, we'd probably be together. Maybe in the cafeteria talking about Hawaii while she eats a fruit cup. I just missed her presence.
While in the midst of my lonely thinking at midnight, my phone buzzed. It was from an unknown number. The only thing it said was "hey stranger :)!" I responded with "who's this?" I stared at the message for what seemed like forever but in reality it had only been ten seconds.
It was Remington. My short lived fling. Once she mentioned her name, I stood up from my bed. I was thinking of not responding until she said "Friends?" with a question mark. I did like Remington. She was so different from Evangeline. Remington was kind of like me. She was sort of outcasted at times and loved the color black. If our fling never ended, I'm pretty sure we would've never ended. We liked each other, a lot. My old fling with her won't get in the way. I responded with "friends." I then proceeded to ask about Cora and Rhett. She told me they missed me and wanted to see me soon. Was it bad that I was more leaning towards seeing Remington more? I did miss her. I really missed her. She was more than just some "fling" to me.
For a second, I thought it was Evangeline. But I know for sure Evangeline would never text me this late. She loves her sleep. Since her birthday was coming up, I knew I had to do something for her. She gave me an interesting few months of adventure. I have to surprise her with something. I knew just what to surprise her with too.
