He reaches out, but no one was there. He slowly opens his eyes, trying not to blur his sight with the light from the lamp that was placed on his side of the bed. He pushes his body up, collecting the blanket that wrapped around his waist and covered himself with it.
He lets out a breath and tried to blink the sleepiness away, adamant in waiting for Mingyu to return to bed. A light tone resounded, it was Mingyu's phone, the screen lighting up notifying the owner of a new message.
Junhui usually played on Mingyu's phone and the latter doesn't mind, considering the owner is nowhere in sight, he thought it won't hurt him when Junhui relays the message for him.
He reaches across to the other side, grasping Mingyu's phone and loops his pinky around the cat keychain he gave to the younger.
He plopped down on his side and started fiddling with the cat keychain. Filled with amusement he forgot why he took the gadget in the first place, taking the time to play with the cat figure, not until another light tone resounded from Mingyu's phone. He faced the screen towards him, catching a glimpse of the lock screen until it timed out.
A new message came.
The screen lit up but he never dared to swipe the message open. He let it idle until the screen timed out again.
Another message.
"Gyu? I'm telling you, don't bother coming here. I said it was nothing already, please reply, it's 2 am."
When the screen turned off, his face reflected on the black screen. And there he could see, tears were welling from his eyes.
He bites his lips hard, drops the phone gently on his side, and rubs the back of his palm on his eyes.It has always been him, right Mingyu?
He guessed he never really had Mingyu's heart even from the very start. It didn't hurt him, that Mingyu was willing to wake up at 2 am and scramble off to Wonwoo's apartment when the latter gets overwhelmed and needs someone to listen to him, needs his best friend to confide with. They were childhood friends after all. Their friendship is something that Mingyu treasures up until this day, and Junhui would never be the annoying boyfriend that prohibits his man to tend to his friend, even though it seems like Mingyu looks after Wonwoo way too much, did he ever had the heart and right to say to Mingyu that he is in need of affection too?
He pressed the home button on the phone, stared at the lock screen long enough that he could still picture it on the back of his head even after the screen turned off.
It was a picture of Mingyu, Wonwoo, Minghao, and him.
But he just now noticed how Wonwoo was wearing Mingyu's sweater. It never truly occurred to him that day the picture was taken, three months ago. He was having fun with Mingyu too much, that the excitement he felt failed to make him notice his surrounding.
It was the same sweater he tried to ask for from Mingyu, the one the latter wears a lot during the cold season. The one that he owned for a very long time."Gyu, where's the navy sweater you always use?"
"I have a lot of sweaters Junnie."
"The one you always wear! Can I have it?" He pouted.
The taller smiled a little and opted to ruffle the older's hair. "You don't need sweaters Junnie, you have me! I can make you warm."
He laughed at the memory. Here he was, alone on the bed with only the blanket to keep him warm from the chilliness two hours past midnight brings to his weary and lonely soul.
