The weather outside was very cold and gloomy. The whole town of Beacon Hills was wet and muddy due to the continuous rains from the past two days. It was still cloudy and again rain was expected. Though she was awake, Nora was still rolling in her bed. She felt so cozy under the blankets that she wished that the school self ignites itself and she can stay in bed forever.
Then she hears a knock on the door and looks up from her blanket to see her mom standing at the door of her room. She is wearing an apron which means she directly came here from the kitchen.
"So when do you intend to wake up honey?" her mother asks with a sarcastic tone. Nora gives a sly smile and says "How about in the afternoon?"
Her mother gives her the 'you-are-in-trouble' smile and says "What were you grades in the last exam? Do you remember them? Because guess what, I do."
Now her tone shifted from sarcastically sweet into typical angry mom. "When I had to meet your teachers last week I felt so miserable. They have totally given up on you. I had to assure them that this time you would perform well in the next exam, but it looks like my assurance is of no use."
Nora sprang into a sitting position and said "Not again mom. I have been studying and am feeling really confident about the coming exams. Trust me I will not fail you."
Her mother rolled her eyes and said "You better keep that word of yours so that I can keep my word. Now go away and get ready, breakfast is almost done."
Nora climbs down from the bed and decides to hit the shower. After shower she gets dressed in her jeans and a jacket and wears her black boots which she bought for the rainy season. She puts her hair in a ponytail and grabs her bag. She starts climbing downstairs and trips over a step which was a bit slippery.
She hits her head and says "Damn these contact lenses". Nora recently developed a myopia and had to wear glasses. Only her parents and her best friend Kaya know about it so she manages it at school by wearing contact lenses. She doesn't want anyone to know about it especially coach Finstock because he would immediately remove her from the lacrosse team, a position she secured after so many years.
Nora always loved lacrosse and wanted to be the first female captain to the lacrosse team. She was always inspired by the former school champion Scott McCall and their assistant coach Liam Dunbar and looked up to them.
She climbs back upstairs and goes to her dressing table. Her case of contact lenses was safely tugged into the drawer of her dressing table in case someone visited her and she gets caught. She takes out the contact lenses from the case and slowly puts one after the another in both her eyes. She blinks of a tear and mutters to herself "Perfect."
She now starts climbing down the stairs confidently. Though she hated wearing those contacts, after putting them she always felt confident.
Nora's mother was at the dining table, arranging it for her meal. It looked like the breakfast was pancakes with maple syrup. It was one of Nora's favorite and she was glad that atleast something was good about the start of the day.
"Aha pancakes. That's good!" Nora exclaimed with clear delight in her voice. Her mother finally gave a smile and said "I know". Nora poured a generous amount of maple syrup on her pancakes and started nibbling them. They were absolute heaven. She enjoyed her meal to the last bite.
Nora looked at the clock and realized that she is already running late. She went to the shoe rack where her mother preferred to stash her lacrosse kit. She picked up the kit and wished her mom goodbye.
After darting out of the door her mother called out to her.
"Nora"
She turned back from her car whose door she has already opened and asked "What is it mom?"
