"Dreams are as simple or as complicated as the dreamer"- Brian Herbert
After this crazy occurrence, I shook my head and went up to me room. As I entered the room, I was in for a surprise.
"This is such a charming little room," said Clara, as she stared at my cat posters and quotes I had placed all over the walls.
"Ahh!!!!!!!!" I screamed. I was going to be killed. Right here, right now by this crazy stalker lady. My heart pounded like a thousand times per second. Did my sister let her in or something? There were two stairways to the second floor, so she could have gone up the other.
"OK, I'm never good at these introductions," she said. "I'm afraid from the look on your face, I've already terrified you. Anyway, all I'm asking is for you not to freak out when I tell you about what I'm here for. I'm part of a group that does studies on sleep and dreams."
"How did...you get in my room"
"Well magic, actually." Clara interrupts my thoughts and purses her lips.
I just stood there dumbfounded. This felt like a scene from a movie. My parents had payed her to prank me or something. She was joking right? I waited for a smile, indicating she was playing around. No smile came.
"I'm just going to get this out, straight and simple. Dreams are a source of inspiration. Even researchers are stumped by them. Oh sure, they can study neurons, but dreams are so much more than that. People attribute them to different sources- their unconisous, divine inspiration, magic, science and so on. The point is Maybell, we have tools to moniter unusual dreams. Your dream activity levels quite frankly are the highest we've seen...well since you grandpa."
"Woah, What?" Know my grandpa was involved? I sat down on my beanbag.
"Dream Inspiration Nationwide Group is almost as old as this country itself. We watch dreams and intervene with magic to inspire people who have given up hope, warn people about future events, and so on. Your Grandpa was head of the group and we were afraid after him our group would die down. But now we've found you." She smiled, as if I would sign up right away. Not quite yet. I needed more information
"Explain the dream I had last night then!" I demanded, clenching my hands and shifting myself on the beanbag.
"Well, ghosts and spirits can enter dreams of very perceptive minds. Most ignore them, because they are what we call a weak signal. Most people just remember on the surface parts of their dreams. But dreams have layers, Maybell. And you have uncovered some of the rarest ones. You communicated with a ghost. That happens one in a blue moon across the country. However, what really stood out is that you percieved the future, something extremely rare. I've only met a handful of people like you."
"So...So My grandpa is still here?" I ask, the happiest I've felt for a year.
"Well," said Clara "deceased ones are always still 'here' as you put it. Memories keep them alive, and many special ones become spirits, as your grandfather did. I just comes down to how well you can perceive it. They're always watching you, it's just a question of if you can see them back."
With that comment, we sat there in silence for quite a bit.
"So," I finally piped up, "Can you explain exactly how DING formed?" I asked.
"Well," she said. "There has always been an umbrella group called the GAINED, or the Global Association Inspiring Nearly Everyone's Dreams. We were going to be called Dream Inspiration for Everyone, but that would have been an unfortunate acronym, don't you agree? Dreams are a big deal. They've been recorded as important for Millenia, such as Joseph's dreams for example. Dreams hold power and can change history." She paused.
"We're a group of people who can make sure they change history for the better. Each generation has special people with the magic ability to inspire others. The senders, as we call them, go into dreams and alter them to inspire. GAINED sent dreams to Einstein, the painter Salvador Dhali, and the guy who discovered the structure of the atom."
"Neils Bohr" I muttered quietly. Despite the fact that I was in shock, I couldn't help but recite science knowledge my dad had taught me.
Clara continued on: "GAINED didn't fully understand these brilliant thinkers' ideas but we knew these people had potential because they had the highest levels of dream activity among the non magic population. So, they went in and did a little sorting of their minds so they could think clearer and come up with the great ideas they did. The Greatest Minds often have the most complicated dreams, so we clear things up provide them with simple, ingenious ideas." Clara took a deep breath.
"So, DING is the US branch?" I asked, finally understanding a bit more.
"Yes, established July 17th, 1776!" She said with pride. "We tried to warn dear Lincoln about his assasination, and he actually received the dream, but still died. Poor Lincoln," Clara shook her head. "Anyways, back to you. I am currently the head of the US branch. It's and honor that I've come personally, usually we just send a messenger. We want you to be a Sender of Dreams."
"What?" I was shocked. "There is no way I could help people with brains like Einstein! I'm not smart enough. If you want someone smart, ask my friend Kate," I said.
"No, we want you Maybell. You have a very different type of intelligence; you perceive things so well that your brain activity is off the charts. You don't have to be Einstein to do this, that's not the point. You just need to be perceptive and help them find unconscious thoughts they already have and surface them back to reality. Besides, there are five levels of difficulty in our program. You will test into one of the five groups and be on a team with a few others across the country. The test will be very effortless, just you dreaming hooked up to an advanced monitor we have" She rummaged through a black purse and grabbed a pamphlet.
"Here's all the information you'll ever need," She leaned down and passed a pamphlet to me with her glossy purple nails. It was very fancy looking, with silver glowing letters and a picture of the moon. I opened it up and glanced at a history section as well as a what we do section.
"Thanks," I said. "So," I continue. "If I hypothetically wanted to join, how would I get to the headquarters of DING?"
"All you have to do," said Clara. "Is look in your Mirror. When you're ready, you'll know. Then you can walk right through."
"Wait, what?" I must have said that like five times since I'd met Clara.
"I'm a sorcerer," Clara said as if explaining this for the millionth time. "I can make magic mirrors that transport only the fairest of them all" She said, trying to make a pun that didn't work too well.
"So now my mirror's enchanted?" I said.
"Yes," said Clara.
"When you are ready, the mirror will let you in." and with that, Clara headed gracefully towards my full size mirror and walked straight through, not leaving a trace behind.
A/N: I really hope you've enjoyed the story so far. I will try to update as soon as I can. It might be slower since school started up again, but oh well.
