Natalia lays in her twin size bed, with her husband's thick and heavy arm wrapped around her torso. He lays so close that she can feel him breathing soundly. These are the peaceful moments of the day she enjoys. The few hours she gets to sleep before the hardships of the day begins. The sun rays peak though their curtains, barely lighting up the room, yet it brings out the light blond and red strands in her dark brown hair. Form a distance the human eye can not even see the extravagant colors, but when they do, they soon come to see she is one of most beautiful creatures to exist.
"Whiiee", the whistle of her mother's infamous tea kettle wakes Natalia from the sincere silence of her sleep. She rolls over and stumbles of the bed, barely making it to her feet. She quickly straightens up, making her gown get caught on a nail that is keeping the bed together. Ripping, yet another hole, in her ragged sleep wear.
"He still has not fixed that damn nail", Natalia sighs with frustration. As she makes her way to the kitchen, she mumbles to her self about how she must do everything in the house if she wants it done.
She peaks though the kitchen door way to see who on earth is making tea at this early hour. She sees her elderly grandmother pacing around the room with a wooden spoon in one hand and a look of concentration on her face. Natalia's grandmother moves around as if she is still in her early thirties, although she turned seventy-six a couple months ago.
Natalia slowly creeps up on her grandmother, taking the spoon from her hand.
"Ahhh!", Natalia's grandmother screams startled. "You damn near gave me a heart attack Talia!"
"Nana Ainsley, you are gonna give yourself a heart attack if you keep moving around like this at your age," Natalia rebuttals with a chuckle as she take the tea of the stove and pours some for her grandmother.
"What are you doing up this early, anyways, using this wretched kettle?" Natalia moves around the kitchen looking for the sugar, finally finding it on the top shelf where her husband always puts it. She grabs a chair, climbing it like a monkey, she finally get the sugar.
"I was just making some porridge before you head of to work this
morning." Nana Ainsley says with a caring tone as she pours the porridge into a round ceramic bowl with a chip that Natalia brought home from work, because she could not sell it."Two spoons, right Nana?" Natalia stirs in the sugar not even waiting for her grandmother's response, because she already knows.
"Nicholas still asleep, is he?", Nana Ainsley scoffs, "that good for nothing slob, lays around the house while you work your behind off."
"Nana! That's not true, he going out to inquire about a job today at the news press", Natalia argues, even though she knows her grandmother is right.
"Well he better find something!" Natalia'a grandmother exclaims. "It's been five months since he last brought home a check!"
"Shh- you'll wake him, Nana", Natalia puts a finger over her lips. She noticed the time on their grandfather clock that stands in their living room across the hall.
Realizing that she has less than 30 minutes to get ready and arrive at work, she guzzles the porridge, and quickly cleans the bowl.
"I have to go Nana, I'm gonna be late!", she kisses her grandmother on the head and heads back to her room to bathe and change.
She picks out a worn out dress that she received as a gift from Nicholas three years ago. Natalia jumps in bath and cleanses herself to get ready for the day. She dries up, changes, and looks in the small foot long mirror they have hanging over the sink. Her hazel eyes stare back at her as she tells herself that things will be different today. She says this to herself every day, but her days are mundane and uneventful. Yet, she keeps hope that one of these days something interesting will happen.
She thinks to herself that maybe today a rich soldier will buy some of her plates. Or a dame will ask her to craft a tea set so magnificent that all her guests will ask where she got it. Thinking about the possibilities of what she will encounter today gives her a small smile.
She walks over to her sleeping husbands, kisses his cheek and whispers, "I love you", as she starts to head out of the house.
