Rachel's pov
I get up minutes before the alarm goes off, I don't even know why I still use one because my body is so used to getting up at 5am.
Today is the first day of school, many students hate this day but for me its just as normal as any other day. My body gets up and starts doing my morning routine. Sometimes I think that I am trapped inside a robot whose every move is preplanned.
I put on a grey full sleeve t-shirt and a blue wrangler, while finding my rule-book. I have a set of rules for almost everything I do and school was no execption.
Rule 1 - No socializing with anyone execpt for teachers and when it is really needed.
Rule 2 - Being early to every class and getting an A as well.
Rule 3 - Not getting in trouble by any meansI come down to play with my best friend apparently my only friend Rex. I know Rex is a labrador, but who said he can't be my friend.
Mom makes these delicious pancakes on first day of every school year. Hoping to cheer me up.
"so who's ready to make some friends today"
Why does she even bother asking when she already knows the answer."I don't need friends, besides I already have Rex"
I say reluctantly."How about adding some humans to the list ?"
"You already know I have trouble socializing" I say already being annoyed.
"You could wear the crop top that I bought for you, or how about those jeans? who knows maybe some boy would talk to you."
"No, no, and no. First the crop top exposes too much of my skin and you know that I like my skin to be covered by 100% cotton t-shirts which, by the way, I am already wearing. Second those jeans..."
"Honey let her be" My dad interupts our conversation. He is the only one who doesn't force me to be out of my comfort zone.
"She can't be like this always. She needs to have a social life."
My mother says folding her hands."C'mon she is special" Dad says trying to defend me. I hate it when he uses that word. Makes me sound as if I am a martian.
"I am autistic there's nothing special about that, besides I even googled about it, every one in one hundred and eighty nine girls is autistic, and considering our population that's still a big number"
We eat our breakfast and no one speaks a word. Happens every other day, so I am quite used to it.
Entering the hallways I realize how easy it is for people to make friends. Every other boy or girl is talking to someone, even when they aren't they are probably on their phones instagramming or texting.
Smartphones were banned at first but then parents complained about how smartphones help them stay connected with their kids.
I get to my locker to take my books while someone shouts, "Hey weirdo where did you spend your summer, in the library?"
Well he is not entirely wrong I did spend my summer buried in books, but I don't consider myself a weirdo. I would never waste my time arguing with him because
'arguing with a fool proves that there are two'.I get to my class and get my perfect seat which is in the corner where no one wants to sit. Three periods have already been finished I loved those but some students barely survived through them.
My calculas teacher Mr. Johnson comes in and just as he is about to write something on the board...
"Sorry I'm late..."
he says while walking in."no worries leo. We haven't even started yet" Mr. Johnson smiles while saying.
Why does he get special treatment?Because he's the football team qaurterback, and also the most popular guy in school. I hate it when he gets away with things.
He walks in and doesn't sit where I think he should have, but continues walking towards me and sits beside me.
As Mr. Johnson begins writing derivative problems on board I click open my pen and start going through them.
"hey, you got a pen?"
he says while looking at me.My consience reminds me of Rule 1, and I ignore him.
Other girls would have been dieing to talk to him, why wouldn't they, his skin is a dark shade of brown with an atheletic figure and he also has a unique haircut which I heard is called fade.
"hey, you got a pen?"
he says a little louder.I take out a blue pen from my case and extend my hand over to his desk without saying anything.
He takes it and starts writing the questions. I am almost half way through my problems when I see that Leo is still struggling with the first one. It isn't even that difficult, you just have to take the derivative of x cube with respect to x which is three x square.
I have an urge to solve his problem for him, because it is irritating the living hell out of me seeing him struggle through the most easy problem.
I finally give in to my urge and say, "Let me help" and signal him to pass his notebook towards me. There I've done it, my body seems foriegn to me now that I've broken Rule 1.
"Thanks girl. This shit is killing me"
he says while handing over his notebook.I solve them and give it back to him and also write the formulae which are used to solve them on the last page so that I won't have to keep braking my rules.
"Here, I've written the formulas at the back."
handing the notebook over to him without looking at him."yeah thanks but how do I use them?" he asks raising his right eyebrow.
Just as I am about to tell him the school bell rings. Phew, saved by the bell.
"Maybe some other time."
He says while walking out. With some more lectures done the first day of school ended and I came home and told rex about what happened at school and he did what he does best listened while I kept talking and scratching his head.
Time seems to fly when your thinking about something you've done. In my case I spent the whole time after school thinking about why I broke rule 1 that too on the first day of my senior year.
I sit down to have my dinner. We always sit together me, mom, and dad. Its a rule.
"So did you make any real friends today"
My mom begins interrogating me.I keep mum and don't say a word. While dad gives me a reassuring look.
"I thought so. Thats why I've decided if you don't get yourself a real friend or a boyfriend I am gona send rex away."
Jolts run through my body at rex's mention.
"you can't be doing that he's my only friend." I say being defensive and run up to my room.
"Just wait and see" I hear her saying while running up.
