Night 1

The exhibition hall was completely empty and silent. There was not a soul — a stark contrast to barely an hour before. There was an eerie feel to it that you couldn’t pinpoint your finger on.

Sighing, you leaned against the chair and began flipping through the manual that Crypton Future Media (the company that owned the performing vocaloids) gave you. You’d been put in the small, sound and image system room, and you were given a flashlight which — last you checked — barely even worked. You wondered why you were given an entire room — wouldn’t it have been safer and more fun to patrol the entire hall instead of staying in a claustrophobic room and staring at security camera footages? After all, the exhibition hall was big and there was lots of space that you didn’t have to feel confined in.

Absentmindedly you began to hum a tune — it was from the song Hand in Hand, which had been performed earlier that night during the concert. It was a fan favourite that was performed over and over again, each year, despite coming out several years prior; and from its uplifting tune and bright lyrics, you could see why.

The manual was barely anything fancy — just a thin book with barely any words beside a title on the cover. You began skimming through the text, ignoring the brief introductions to what vocaloid was — please, which non-vocaloid fan would take such a job? Your entire motivation was to get close to Crypton’s technology, get some exposure, and get to experience a live concert of your favourite virtual idols first-hand. You definitely weren’t going to meddle with any equipment or anything, but just their presence made you feel satisfied.

“Your role as a nightguard is simple, to watch over the equipment so that everything will be in place for the next day of the concert. All you have to do is stay awake and make sure nothing happens, everything stays in place and intact.”

Seemed simple enough, you thought to yourself. After all, how hard could it be to just watch a few camera monitors? If anything, it would be utterly boring.

“In the past, nightguards could roam about the exhibition halls throughout the night. However, due to certain incidents, this right was revoked. For the safety of our employees, we have only allowed them to stay in the room they have been given, and watch through the security camera footage.”

Certain incidents? You silently mused. What could have possibly happened that would make Crypton ban walking around? Someone stole equipment?

“There have also been reports of the projectors malfunctioning at night. Some nightguards have reported seeing the vocaloids outside their rooms, or roaming about through the exhibition halls. Of course, this is most likely because they’re tired, and it’s hard to see at night. Plus, there are many life-sized figurines, posters, and promotional items all placed within the venue, which could be another explanation to why they see the vocaloids.”

Seeing the vocaloids would be pretty cool, wouldn’t it? After all, you were a huge fan of them since young, and had been wishing to meet them in real life for years. Although you knew that would never happen, you still never managed to cease your wishful thinking.

“But for some nightguards; when day breaks, we can't find a trace of them.”

Your eyes widened and you ran your vision along that line several more times. What did that mean? Suddenly, the situation seemed a lot more darker than you signed up.

“However, after those incidents, Crypton has increased our security by tons. The doors are securely locked and can only be opened by people who have the card to the hall. We have also ensured no alternative entry routes, as well as placing you, the nightguard, in a safer location. You don’t have to worry about anything happening; Crypton Future Media has you covered.”
