It's was a wonderful day filled with family and joy, until I heard a child scream bloody murder. As a retired EMT I knew right away it was the screams of sheer pain. In the panic of people I see my wife run to me holding my daughter. My heart dropped, both my wife and I were watching her to make sure she wouldn't fall into the pond they had at the park. Once she walked up to my wife who was changing our infant son's diaper, I decided to help clean up after the party. Apparently my daughter stepped into the fire pit that was just a stone throw away from her mother. The white ashes on top of the smoldering coals imitated sand, at least to the eyes of a three and a half year old.
Putting aside the fact it was my daughter I get right to work by dunking her feet into ice water that was used for the salad buffet. The screams from her stab me with pain as I do everything I can for her.
In the panic of the crowd I hear "who's car are we taking her in." In that Instant I grab my phone and toss it to my cousin who is the the left of me, only one what isn't in total panic. I say clearly to her "call 9-1-1." I look to my right as see Jeff my other cousin and yell at him to go flag down the ambulance from the Main Street.
It seemed like hours before the ambulance arrived, when in reality it was only a matter of minutes. The EMT's jump out of the flashing red vehicle and I come to them holding my daughter. And jump into the ambulance along with her. Her mother is in no condition of calm to ease her daughter. I simply tell my wife to get the car and follow us.
They attempt to get an IV into her arm, but all she yells is "no more needles! No more needles!" I calmly say "Brianna, let them do their job. You are just going to have to be a big girl and do this okay." And with that said she didn't bother to flinch.
The ambulance comes to a clearing where a helicopter is waiting for her. This is where I have to leave her and accompany my wife to get to the hospital. "You're going to be alright okay Brianna, they are going to take care of you. I'll see you soon." That was all I was able to get out before she was swept away into the copter and into the air.
Once we arrived to the hospital and I reached the 4th floor i admittedly knew where my daughter was just by the ear piercing screams.
