Natalia sits on her old desk. It was once a nice dark brown color, but after all the years of usage, it has faded with many chips in the wood. She stares at the diary on her hand with the moon light shining on the red cover giving it a magical glow. She could not stop thinking about it since she picked it up.

She looks over at Nicholas sound asleep. He was devastated when he did not get the job today. Natalia decided that she would go down to the press and insist they hire him. She never wanted to come down to begging but with less and less money coming, they need it more than ever.

Natalia looks back at the diary. She did not want to tell anyone about it, not even her grandmother. She wanted it to be her little secret. She deserved that at least, everything else she has or does is for her family. She opens the drawer, trying to be quiet, and pulls out one of her many inks and quills. Her father loved writing so he bought her a writing set for her every birthday. She never used them much, so many of them are still full.

She opens the diary. Deciding only to place her initial, "NG", in the case that anyone finds the diary they can not track it back to her. Before she knows it she is zoned out in her writing.

Entry one:
May 2 1892
Today, no yesterday, I found this diary on my way home. Maybe it was faith that brought me to it or just a pure coincidence, but either way I have always wanted one. Yesterday was quite a day, I experience Sophia's anger once again, but that made the day all the more exciting. I long for a time when all my days are as exciting as yesterday. I long for a day where I do not have to sell my passion to bring the bread for my family. My husband is still looking for a job, it had been a long time since he has been laid off. I am trying to be patient with him, but the strain of solely providing for our family is weighing my happiness. However I must prevail, it is what I must do, therefore no more complaining. I hope today will be a good day. Rain cloud seem to be moving in, if it rains the store will have to be closed and I must go place sand bags around the store before the rain gets heavy. I ripped my night gown yesterday. I saw a extravagant one hanging from a stores window on my way home. It was a faint yellow sleeveless and lace on the bottom, quite scandalous. I could only dream of owning it. Maybe when Nicholas finds a job we can put enough money aside to buy it. It's getting late now, I should go to sleep before the sun rises.

See you again my dear diary,
NG

Natalia closes her diary and slips into the covers with Nicholas. Her side of the bed is cold but Nicholas's body warms her up. She barely gets to see him these days. He comes home for dinner and barely talks, and goes to sleep right after. She stares at his lips longing for a kiss, but decides against it, not wanting to wake him from his slumber. She faces the other way staring at the old wooden wall as a tear falls down her rosy cheek. She loves Nicholas, is what she tells herself, but deep down she knows the connection has dimmed. She blames it on the stress of work and the economy, saying it will go back to normal once everything is settled.

Natalia shuts her eyes trying to sleep, only to toss and turn all night. Before she knows it, the sun peeks though her window and her day begins.
