At first, Theo was disoriented.
Where am I? he wondered.
He didn't wake up to the rotting stench of garbage, so he knew that he wasn't in his shack at Wasted Tears.
His eyes having adjusted to the darkness, he saw Mr. Joob's sinister face and he remembered that he was at Compassion NGO.
Looking flabbergasted, Mr. Joob frowned. "What? You're still conscious? Didn't you eat that congee?"
I knew there was something funny in that congee, Theo thought.
Regaining his composure, Mr. Joob crept closer and then put a hand on the boy's mouth. "Never mind. This will only take a few minutes. It'll all be over soon."
Theo didn't know what exactly the director had in mind...but he didn't want to stay around to find out.
Mr. Joob then groped and fondled him on some private parts of his body, namely his penis and his butt.
Realizing what was happening, Theo tried to wrestle away from the old man.
No! he thought. This can't be happening!
But it was.
Theo fought back.
He kneed Mr. Joob in the groin.
"OW!" cried Mr. Joob.
The director's hand flew off Theo's mouth long enough for the boy to shout, "Help!"
On the bunk above him, Wolfie stirred.
"What?" she mumbled, half-awake.
"Let go of me!" Theo shouted.
Mr. Joob had him pinned down onto the bed and no matter how hard the young man struggled, he couldn't get up.
He tried kneeing the old man again, but Mr. Joob evaded it.
Across the room on the other bunkbed, the man and woman were still sound asleep. Theo thought that if they woke up, they might try to help him, but they were either very heavy sleepers or too stoned to wake up.
He knew it was all up to him, but Mr. Joob was just too strong.
Whenever he tried to get up, Mr. Joob just knocked him back down again.
I will not give up! Theo thought.
Mr. Joob turned Theo onto his back, so that the boy's ass was facing the director.
Next, with one hand pinning Theo's back down with one strong hand, Mr. Joob removed the boy's pants with his other hand, so that Theo's bare bottom was now exposed and vulnerable.
Then, Mr. Joob removed his own pants, revealing his erection.
Lastly, Mr. Joob tried jamming his erect cock into the boy's anus.
Breathing hard, Theo panicked.
I will not become a rape victim! he thought. I will not!
He moved his butt out of the way.
Then, he pressed both arms against the bed and tried to push up, but Mr. Joob pushed him back down again.
Theo tried to reach for his can of pepper spray, but it was gone. It must have fallen out of his pocket.
"Hold still," Mr. Joob said. "I can't put it in if you move around like this."
Just as Mr. Joob tried again to plunge deep into him, Theo's silver whistle pressed against his chest.
Feeling the souvenir on his chest, his atypical dream came back to him vividly.
Usually, his mother would say nothing to him in his dream.
But that night, she had said, "Your grandmother handed this down to me. It's always been a lucky charm for me. I want you to have it."
And as he thought about his dream, the whistle began to glow.
What happened next astounded him.
A figure in a white hood and white shirt and pants appeared next to Theo.
This figure grabbed Mr. Joob and knocked him right off the boy.
Eyes wide, the old man flew several feet into the air and then collapsed onto the floor, the wind knocked out of him.
Too shocked to move, Theo lay there.
He scanned the room for the figure, but he or she had already disappeared.
Who was that figure in the white hood? How did he or she materialize out of nowhere?
At that moment, Wolfie climbed down from the top bunk and kicked Mr. Joob's head.
The director lost all consciousness.
Theo had seen Wolfie fight many times, but he was still amazed that for such a tiny skinny girl, Wolfie sure could pack a punch, or in this case, a kick.
His assailant finally defeated, Theo became energized.
He said, "Let's get outta here!" He grabbed Wolfie's hand and together, they dashed out of the room.
They passed Sue the receptionist, who was fast asleep in front of the TV.
They raced toward the exit, fleeing Compassion NGO forever.
