"I saw the world in black and white instead of the vibrant colors I knew existed."- Katy McGarry

Mattias pov
I looked up at the small cafe seeing it wasn't busy, with only a small white car parked in the front. I opened the slim door, immediately greeted with the smell of strong coffee and desserts. The bells above me chimed as I paid no mind to the loud noise. I looked over at the front desk that stood with an old lady grabbing what looked like a muffin from the large class counter. I kept my hands in my pocket walking up to the desk to order. Once she noticed my presence a huge smile etched onto her face. As hard as it was to force a smile, I managed to smile back momentarily, my face falling back to its usual blank expression.

"Hi dear what can I get you?" She asked still smiling up at me. I looked up at the chalkboard in front of her that contained the menu. After a couple seconds I looked back at her.

"Black coffee please." I said lightly trying my best not to come off intimidating.

"That all?" She suddenly looked confused. I subtlety nodded my head not wanting to answer any questions.

"Okay then that will be two dollars." She said her face quickly falling back to its wide smile. I gave her five dollars telling her to keep the rest. She thanked me before scurrying off to the back leaving me to find a seat.

I turned my heal towards the other side of the cafe my eyes immediately landing on a familiar figure. The small boy that worked at the hotel. His head was held low in what looked like a book, paying no mind to me. Without thinking twice I sauntered towards him, taking the seat in front of him. I crossed my arms waiting for him to look up. Slowly but surely he looked at me, his face stiffening with a small blush.

"Hey." I said casually playing with the straw wrapper on the table, glancing up to meet his eyes. He looked super nervous to say anything making me smirk.

"Hi." He squeaked making me chuckle. He sunk back in his chair, his face turning a darker red. I stayed silent with a tiny smirk evident on my face as I continued to watch him. His hands wrapped around his plastic clear cup that looked like soda. Bringing the straw into his mouth, keeping his eyes glued to the table.

"What's your name?" I asked after moments of silence. He glanced at me before quickly look back down at the table.

"Kairi." He said muttered nervously. I nodded my head, I liked it but I wasn't going to tell him that.

"Yours?" He asked to my surprise.

"Mattia." I replied as the old lady that worked here brought over both a muffin and my black coffee. She sat the muffin in front of Kairi, his eyes immediately lighting up. I don't think I've ever seen someone get so excited over a muffin.

"You guys enjoy." She flashed a smile towards both of us. We both thanked her as she walked off leaving us alone again.

"Why are you so scared of me?" I dared to ask knowing it would put him on the spot even though I knew why. I sorta felt bad but it was amusing watching him blush and become nervous.

"I'm not." He said quietly finally meeting my eyes without looking down. I nodded my head with a smirk sensing his lie.

"If you say so." I decided not to push it, bring the coffee mug up to my lips. He watched me, playing with his hands in front of him. I wasn't sure if this was his way of providing he wasn't scared of me but it did in fact surprise me. I didn't think he could keep eye contact longer than five seconds.

"I like your rings." He suddenly said making me raise my brows. I looked down at my rings that covered most of my fingers, shrugging.

"Yeah? I've always liked rings since I was little." I said looking back over at him. He nodded at my words, still looking at my hands. My eyes drifted to his wrists that were covered in all sorts of bracelets.

"I like your bracelets." I said grabbing his wrist gently. He quickly flinched pulling his hand back with a scared look. I softened at his expression before quickly letting my demeanor go back to normal.

"It's okay I just wanna see your bracelets." I said mercifully knowing I shouldn't have done that unexpectedly. He blushed dropping his hand back to the table.

"Sorry." He muttered looking off to the side. While he wasn't looking I grabbed his wrist again, this time he didn't flinch. A certain one stood out to the rest, it was gold with a cursive carving engraved in the middle. I adjusted it so I could read it.

"Maiya" it read with a small heart beside it. I flipped the middle part over which also contained a carving of a date. February eighth, 2017.

"Who's this for?" I asked looking up at him. I noticed his face had completely fallen with a frown upon his lips.

"My sister who passed away when she was eight." He said weakly still looking at the bracelets in a daze.

"Shit I'm sorry." I apologized even though sympathy didn't come easy to me. As much as I wanted to feel bad, I didn't. I knew I was fucked up, I was numb to everything. That's what years of trauma and shitty mental health does to you.
