whilst on a trip to target, percy purchases a magic eight ball and asks it questions. they are dating in high school. this is in annabeth's pov.

"Percy, you don't need that Batman tricycle," I said, but he ignored me. He ran over to it like a little kid, moved his glasses so he could get a better look, then laughed.

"Annabeth, we have some young child-hood vandalism on the loose." I rolled my eyes and walked over, and Percy grinned, pointing to the Mickey Mouse stickers plastered all over the children's bike. I laughed, and Percy wrapped an arm around my waist, and we stood there, staring at it.

"D'you think Leo was here?" He joked, voice low and by my ear. I shrugged, and he moved on.

"Percy, why are we meandering around Target?"

"Why are you using big words?" He asked, then his eyes lit up. He took my hand and dragged me to the iPhone displays. The one there now was the new iPhone 7+, which I personally thought was too big. On a board behind the display was a sign with a silhouetted iPhone 8 shrouded by a multi-colored cloud against the white background. Nicely designed, but that was all I could say for it.

We walked together down the middle of the aisle, past little kids fighting over Superman comics and others over Barbies. Adults arguing about which camera took better photos (but both of them sucked). Finally we found what he was looking for.

"Annabeth, look at this!" He let go of me and ran for the clearance wall. It was full of things like puzzles, board games and mini Lego sets. Percy rifled through the stuff, then looked to the left, and I could tell he was smiling. He disappeared from view for a second due to a family of four walking in front of me, their shopping cart filled with baby furniture, but I followed him using his cowlick as an indicator. I smiled at the family as they passed, then jogged a little to meet Percy, who was giddily holding a box in his hand.

"Whatcha' got, Percy?"

He turned to me, green eyes light with excitement. "A magic eight ball!"

I scoffed, and he frowned at me. "What?"

"You know those don't actually work, right?" I asked. He looked from the box to me, and back to the box again.

"It does so, Annabeth. Look, it says 'magic' right in the title! We deal with magic all the time-"

His sentence was cut short as I slapped my hand over his mouth. He muffled a response and I took my hand away.

"What was that for?" He asked.

"You don't know who's watching," I said, bringing his face to mine, "There could be monsters in disguise."

"Oh, come on, Annabeth. You're being paranoid." He then grinned, and I caught the sense of arrogance waving over him, which wasn't like him. "Besides, I've got the smartest girl with me, and that specific pen in my pocket. We'd be fine."

He winked, and I rolled my eyes, unable to stop myself. "Okay." It didn't make the fact that any one of these shoppers could be a threat go away, but he managed to make the thought escape my head. My dagger felt like it was burning my side under my shirt.

"Look, I'll even ask." Percy shook the box, and I caught the TRY ME sticker in the corner. "O' magic ball of eight, will we be attacked on today's date?"

I looked at him pointedly. "Nice rhyme there, Seaweed Brain."

"I specialize in rhymes," he muttered, eyes focused on the black ball. A triangle-shaped bubble appeared in the purple water, and the word NO  shined up at us. Percy grinned proudly, shoving the box in my hand.
