"How many of these did you need again?" Rio asked me

"How many of these did you need again?" Rio asked me. I looked over at the fruit. "Um, I should probably get a bag of those. Cesar likes it when I mix the fruit in with the kool-aid." Rio smiled, "That does sound pretty good."

"Your abuela never made your kool-aid with fruit in it?" He shook his head, "Nah, never." "Oh wow. I'll make some when we get back to the house. It's really good." "If you make it I'm sure it's good." I smiled a little, actually blushed. But I tried to hide it. We walked through a few more aisles and added a few more things to the cart. "Okay that should be good for the next few weeks."

Rio walked with me to check out. Once the lady finished ringing everything up she told us the total. "That will be $143.92." I reached into my pocket to pull out my debit card, but before I could give it to the cashier Rio was already handing her the cash. "No, Rio, what are you doing?" He smiled at me, "It's cool I got this. Spooky told me to make sure you're good. That's what I'm going to do." I frowned a little. "You didn't have to do that." "I didn't. But I wanted to." He started putting all the bags into the cart and I just sighed.

I followed him out to the parking lot and he started unloading the groceries into the trunk of his car. I grabbed a few bags to help him, but he took them from my hand. "What are you doing? I'm trying to help you." He shook his head, "Uh uh, you go sit your pretty self in the car. I got this." I frowned again. Why was he doing all of this? I got into the passenger seat and buckled up. He placed the last of the groceries into the trunk and closed it up. After he put the basket up he got in the car and started it up. He looked over at me and smiled. "You okay?" I nodded, "Yeah, just not used to someone doing all of that I guess."

"Really? The way Oscar talks about you I was sure he treated you like a goddess."

I sat back in my seat and got quiet. I didn't really know what to say back to that. I mean, Oscar is really sweet to me. Usually he and I go half on the groceries and I always help put them up. Unless we're arguing then he always does all of it. I decided to just shrug it off. When we pulled up to the house, Cesar and all of his friends were sitting outside on the porch. I got out of the car. "Hey Cesar, can you guys come help get the groceries?"

They all stood up. "Of course."

Rio followed me into the house and started to help me put things away as they bought them inside. "Oh, no, put the rice in this cabinet. Oscar likes it over here, away from the refrigerator." Rio frowned a little bit. "But Oscar isn't here." I nodded, "I know, but I still like to put things the way he likes them. It's his house." "But, he's not here. You are. You're running the house right now, so you should be able to put it where you want to." He walked closer to me, "Plus, without him here, who's gonna help you reach it, from all the way up there?"

I bit my lip slightly. He had a point. "I guess you're right. Okay, put it over here instead." Rio smiled, "Yes ma'am."

Cesar and everyone else had come back inside and sat the last of the groceries on the counter. "Thanks Salad." I expected him to say you're welcome, but instead I looked up to see him glaring at Rio. "Cesar? You okay?" He shook it off and looked at me. "Yeah, sorry." "Alright, well you guys go back outside. I'll call you once dinner is finished." Cesar nodded. "Okay. If you need me, I'll be right outside. Just shout okay, I'll hear you." I frowned a little and laughed, "Okay? Thanks."

Once Cesar and everyone were outside I washed my hands to get ready to start on dinner. I looked up at Rio who was just watching me. "Oh, did you want to stay for dinner?" He nodded, "If that's okay?" "Sure, why not." "Can I help?" "Yeah, just wash your hands first and I'll show you what to do." He rolled up his sleeves and washed his hands in the sink. "So what are we making?" "I was thinking tacos. It will be quick and easy and I can feed everyone." He nodded.

"Okay, so can you cut the vegetables. I'll get started on browning the meat and heating the tortillas and shells." Rio grabbed the vegetables from the refrigerator. I handed him a knife and watched as he started cutting everything up. "Where did you learn to cut like that?" He smiled at me, "My abuela. She didn't put fruit in our kool-aid, but she knew a thing or two about the kitchen still." I smiled at him and continued to watch him.

"You want me to show you?" I shook my head, No it's okay. He sucked his teeth and pulled me over in front of him. "Come here. Just cut like this. Cut your whole vegetable in half and then in half again and then you can start with the smaller cuts." He placed the knife in my hand and then held my hand. He placed his other hand on my hip to hold me in place. "Just like that. Now you just want to rock it. An up and down rocking motion. See you got it morenita." I smiled, "That's pretty easy." "Nah, you're just a good learner." I giggled and then looked up at him. He stared back at me and quickly licked his lips.

I moved from being so close to him. "Thank you. I should get back to this ground beef before it burns."

I focused my attention back on the pan with the meat. I could still feel my cheeks burning a little from turning so red. Why am I acting like this? Rio is just a friend. Right?
