I woke up gasping for air, sweat plastered my hair to my face I looked up, Hoping, wishing to see the loving faces of my family and to finally be free of this horrible life that I live in. But no such luck, sighing I sit up, walk down to the shower corridor, I gasp as the freezing cold water hits my skin, typical of the house to have cold water, the soap cycle starts and sprays me down with a sickly sweet mixture of disinfectant and cherry cordial smelling soap. The Teachers favorite sweet. I walk again through the frigid shower of water hitting me from all directions. And out into the bright white lights of the inspecting room. I look into the piercing gaze of the Teacher and take a deep breath.
“ITEM SCANNED, MERIALETH REEDWATER MAY PROCEED TO THE READY ROOM”
I let go of the breath, I did not know I was holding, and walk into the Ready room. The scent of roses hits me like a brick wall, Fairies bustle around holding pitchers of water and different colored powders, my fairy muighia, twitters over. her horns are a bright yellow and her eyes, slits like a cat . She looks at me and puts her head in her hands.
“Oh sweetie.”
She reaches out to touch my scrapes and bruiises. I pull away,
“They work you too hard”.
She starts powdering my face, erasing the pain of the day before with spells and potions. She dresses me in a silk jumpsuit with protective fabric and patches where I can store reviving potions and A27 powder. I move on to the next room and can see the rest of the learners sitting around lazily picking their nails or working on survival skills in different groups around the room. It was exactly 1 hour and 23 minutes until the first injection and 45 minutes until the first drop off.
I walked over to the 3rd table where Aien and I always sat. He was gone today, after a nasty bite from a sirthas viper. I glanced over at the next table where the enlightened sat. They always thought that they were so much better that all of the other learners, But did not know the feeling of living rough, and were lacking many of their survival skills. I looked over at the grunts. Where the enlightened were educated they were all violence, running around, clubbing people who didn't constantly check behind their back. They kept us on our feet. Then I looked over at the worst table yet, The Warlock table. Warlocks are the royalty of The House. With their silver hair, and snakelike grins, Always torturing you with their ability to produce spells and elixirs in the blink of an eye while the rest of us learners, struggled to stay awake in alchemy class. But today I grinned as I looked over at their table. She wasn't there. I was expecting so. Even with her high tech healing abilities she would not be able to heal a broken jaw. It was then that Aein stumbled over, looking a pale sickly green. Groaning he almost tripped over our table. I caught him,
“Whoa there buddy.” I said with a grin. But when I saw his face I stopped smiling. “Oh my god Aien, you look terrible! why did they let you out so early?!”
“Missed the Drop Off yesterday,” he wheezed. Can’t miss again” I shook my head.
“I am not letting you fight like this.” I said stubbornly.
“But Mari-”
“NOPE” You know the policy, friends look out for friends.”
“I am not letting you die out there.”
“Fine, he said with a sigh”, “But how The Hell are we going to do this without Teacher seeing.”
“Watch,” I said with a sly grin, “You'll see.
