I sit with Newt, enjoying the warmth of the fading sun as it slips below the rim of the wall, bathing the entire Glade in soft golden light. "I love this", I say happily and lean my head on Newt's shoulder, "The perfect moment at the end of any day".
"Unless it's raining", Newt says, then laughs as I punch his shoulder, "No, I agree, love. It's beautiful".
"As beautiful as me?" a voice says from behind us, and I fake a loud groan. "Oh, it's you", I say, throwing as much contempt into the word as I can, and Minho laughs as he sits down on my other side.
I flash him a grin, and we fall into companionable silence, then I ask the question that has been itching away at me for the two weeks I've been in the Med-jack hut, "Have you found anything?"
Minho sighs and the relaxed air around us disappears, "Not a shucking thing. Even that Griever you squished is gone".
I look at him in confusion, "Gone? How?"
"Beats me" he shrugs, "Guess the Creators didn't want us looking too closely at it".
"But it was crushed in the wall! We would've heard if they removed it".
"I dunno how they did it shank, but it's gone".
I think for a while, "What about in the Maze? Any changes?"
Minho shakes his head, "Its just the usual patterns", but something in his voice catches my attention. "What is it?" I ask, and he looks at me, "Nothing" he says innocently, and I narrow my eyes, he's obviously hiding something, but I decide to bide my time and wait till a better time to find out what.
"Sure", then I shiver as the last rays of warmth dissipate, and a huge full moon rises over the Glade. "Come here, love" Newt says and holds out his arms, inviting me into his embrace, and I accept, moving to sit with my back pressed against his chest and his arms encasing me in his warmth.
I feel Minho's eyes on me before he stands up, "I'll leave you to it, I'm going to bed" he says shortly and walks away. I sigh, my heart slightly bruised from his rough behaviour and Newt squeezes me tightly.
"It'll be ok, love" he whispers in my ear, and I close my eyes, letting his sweet, accented voice soothe me and feeling his warm breath on my skin. "I know, he's just..." I trail off, gesturing helplessly with my hands, trying to convey all my thoughts into actions, and Newt nods, understanding me as only he can.
He holds me for a while, and I relax in his embrace, then my mind wanders back to our earlier conversation. "What's changed in the Maze?" I ask, and Newt hesitates. "Minho didn't want to tell you".
"Why not?"
"He thinks you might try to go into the Maze before you're properly healed".
I snort, "I'm not that stupid, if I can't run there's no way I'm setting foot in there".
Newt looks alarmed, and I hurry to reassure him, smiling quietly to myself at his concern, "I can run Newt! Just not quite as well as before, Jeff says I'll be fine after a few more days".
He relaxes, and I smile, He wants to protect me so much, I wonder if he's forgotten I'm a Runner. "If I promise not to go into the Maze, can you tell me what's changed?" I ask, and he considers, hugging me tightly and resting his chin on my shoulder.
I play with his soft blonde hair as he thinks, tangling my fingers around the silky strands and pulling gently, "I guess so" he says, and I smile, "Well I promise not to leave the Glade until I'm allowed".
He returns the smile and kisses my forehead, then his face turns serious, "The Grievers have changed".
Instantly my happy demeanour vanishes and I match his serious attitude, "What do you mean changed?" I ask, and he frowns, "Not physically, they're still blobs, but their movements have changed. They're more active in the day, and we've seen them close to the Glade".
