Sam had been attending Milligan High for two months now- and in hunter time, that was quite a while. He hadn't made any friends- he knew that it was pointless, that one word from his father would mean leaving this poky little suburb and its inhabitants behind. He didn't care. He kept his head down and his grades up, and no one noticed him- or so he thought.
Sam's thoughts drifted as his Physics teacher droned on about forces- something Sam had already studied twice at previous schools. He was thinking about the demon that he and his brother, Dean, had exorcised last week. The things it had said about his mother. No, he decided. He wasn't going to think about that. He let his mind wander onto the promise their father had made afterwards.
"Yes, you can stay until graduation," John had said, looking wearily at his youngest son's solemn face, covered in dried blood. Sam had been relieved. His exams were out of the way, and he knew that he was well on course for the top grades. He just wanted his family to be together at a normal event, just like any other family. He wanted to feel like he had completed something.
The bell rang, and everyone stood up abruptly, chairs squeaking against the linoleum floor. It was like someone had turned the volume up. Sam stayed where he was, ducking down to fish for his back. When he finally resurfaced, he was the only one left in the classroom, apart from a blonde girl and the teacher.
"Thanks, Mrs Jenkins," he said to the teacher politely, and turned to go. But the blonde girl was standing in the doorway, blocking the way out.
"Sam, right?" she said, her voice high and breathy, almost nervous, twirling a strand of hair through her fingers.
"Um... yeah," Sam said uncertainly. There was a pause. "And you're..." he searched awkwardly for the name.
"Elle," she said, her voice newly sharp and short. She looked offended that he didn't know her name. "Anyway," she started again, her voice softening once more. "I was wondering if you wanted to come study at my place tonight? You know we've got that big math test tomorrow, and you're so clever an' all..."
Sam breathed a sigh of relief. "I can't," he said, trying to look apologetic. "I've to get home and help with... well, help."
She pouted. "I'm sure they could live without you for just the one day? To help out a friend?"
Friend? Sam thought. I've never spoken to her before. "My brother's giving me a ride. Actually, he should be here now, and I can't really be late."
He pushed past her as gently as he could and walked off down the corridor, holding his books close to his chest. She watched after him, an expression of shock mixed with anger on her face.
When Sam finally made it to the car park, a flush painted across his cheeks, he was relieved to see Dean standing there, a huge grin on his face. "Hey, little brother!"
Sam ducked into the passenger seat and slumped as low as he could. "Drive, Dean."
"Ooh, what's got your panties in a twist?" Dean leant down into the car, still standing outside.
"Shut up and get in the car," Sam hissed through gritted teeth.
"What's wrong, Sammy? Break a nail?" Dean teased, still not moving.
"No, I- I'm trying to avoid someone," Sam admitted, sinking lower into his seat.
Dean's happy go lucky attitude snapped immediately.
"Someone giving you a hard time?" he demanded, looking around as if to spot the perpetrator.
"God, Dean, no! I'm not a baby, I could sort that out myself," Sam turned angrily on his brother. "It's- it's a girl, alright?"
Dean stood completely still, then burst out laughing. "Sam Winchester, hunter of supernatural creatures, is scared of - of- a girl?" he managed to gasp out between peals of laughter.
Sam looked at his brother, who had completely lost it, then grabbed him by his jacket and yanked him into the car, leaning over him and slamming the door closed.
