Spencer pov
I walked into the kitchen, just as my stomach growled. I hadn't eaten anything today, and it was after school. I was looking through the cupboards for a quick snack when my mum came into the kitchen. She set her coffee flask on the table, and gave a sigh. It sounded like she had been working all day, dealing with all sorts of troubles. I know because she once explained a day in the life of her, and it had tired me out just listening to it.
"Long day?" I asked as she slumped into a seat at the table. I took a packet of biscuits from the cupboard, going to sit across my mother at the table.
"You have no idea. Has Melissa come in yet? She said she was bringing a guest over for dinner." My mother sounded so tired, and it didn't sound as if it was all because of work. Maybe somebody had given her a hard time.
"No, she hasn't been back." I opened the packet of biscuits and offered her one. She took the first one, and I took one. "But then again, neither has dad." I wondered where he was, and if he had just been at work all day. Wouldn't be the first time.
"He probably won't be back tonight." My mother said absentmindedly, as if it was supposed to be a thought instead of spoken words.
"Why? Is he working late?"
"More like not coming home. He is staying somewhere else for a few days." She tried to sound as if it wasn't a big deal.
"Business trip?" I had to ask, although I already knew the answer.
He was awake all night, and slept on the sofa. He was gone earlier than he ever has been before in the mornings, and avoids coming home.
"No, Spence. He's thinking of moving out." As tired as she was, my mother sounded sympathetic when she said this, placing her hand over mine gently on top of the table.
I shrugged it off, getting up to go upstairs. As I grabbed the packet of biscuits, the door opened. Melissa walked in, followed by her 'special guest'. Which of course was Wren. Wren gave me a small smile, but I turned away and headed upstairs.
What is Melissa doing? She can't seriously be switching back and forth between her exes? I mean, Ian is gone now. But going back to Wren? How could she? She knows that mum and dad don't think highly of him now, not after what happened between us.
I went up to my room, and called Aria. I needed a friend right now, someone who I could trust and who would be there for me. And Aria was that friend. She had told me all of her family problems, and for such a small girl, she was holding in a lot. Perhaps I could trust her with how I was feeling. Then a sense of guilt rushed through me. I should call Toby. I should be confiding in Toby. My boyfriend. The one person who is supposed to love me no matter what stupid thing I do next.
I scrolled through the contacts list on my phone, and stopped at a name. I pressed 'call' and waited.
"I need to talk to you." I said, before agreeing a place and a time. Then I hung up and stared at the name on my screen.
Aria.
