Could've been a nightmare but it felt like they were right there

"This is nice, isn't it?" My mother asked holding up a pink dress.

"Yeah." I said after taking a quick glance at it.

"Do you want it?"

"It's not something I would wear."

"Ok."

My mother had decided to take me shopping. She woke up me up in the morning saying she had the day off and she wanted to spend some time with me since my father had work today.

"Are you ok? You seem scattered."

"It's nothing. There's just something on my mind." I said while looking through the clothes on the rack.

"Do you want to talk about it?" My mother asked while looking through the rack and taking a quick glance at me.

I stayed quiet, not sure if I wanted to open up to my mom. She'd always said she's here for me if I want to talk. But do I really want to talk?

I decided against my thoughts and told her what made me feel closed up.

"You're a good mom, you know that? You and dad are great parents. You guys don't have to treat me the way you do. You don't have to worry about me all the time but you do."

My mom and I made eye contact after she'd stopped looking through the clothes and made eye contact with me.

"You guys could've just watched me fall apart and turn into a nightmare. But you didn't. You guys were there for me. You tried to get me the help I needed. And I know it didn't work. I'm sorry the pills didn't work, I'm sorry the therapist didn't work. I'm sorry that you gave up on me at one point."

My mom took a step closer to me and her eyes got glossy. "Sweetie, we never gave up on you. We would never give up on you. We just thought maybe if we stopping trying so hard then it would get easier. And it did, look where we are Y/n." She said cupping my cheeks with her hands as a tear slid down both of our faces. "You have a friend. And judging by what your father overheard Tom seems to really care about you."

"He tells me he does everyday."

"That's good." She smiled. "You deserve someone who listens to you. Some who cares about you the way me and your father do."

I closed my eyes pushed our foreheads together. "Thank you."

I hugged my mom and looked into her crystal eyes when we pulled apart.

"Tell me more about Tom." My mom said, wiping her eyes and looking back down at the clothes. "I see him all the time but I don't know much about him."

I smiled as I looked back down at the clothes. "He's great. I like the way he styles his hair. Sometimes he lets flop around and other times he swoops it to the side with hair gel."

"What else do you like?"

"I like that... he doesn't waste any time to make me feel better when I'm sad." I said thinking back to the time when I first met his grandmother. "I like that he likes my smile."

"He does?"

I responded with an 'mhmm' while looking over to her with dreamy eyes. "He says he wants to see it more." I said while smiling a little bit. "I also like that dad likes him."

"Your father likes him a lot. He always talks about him and you while we're getting ready for bed."

"He does?" I said looking over to meet the side of her face.

"Yes. All the time." She giggled. "He says he hopes you had a good day and that if you didn't, he hopes Tom helped you through it."

"He always does."
