"You're worthless and I hate you!"

Those words said by my own father. I remember the sting on my face when he caressed it softly before striking it. The blow made me want to scream in pain. My face throbbed and I felt my eyes start to water.

I stood there shaking, eyeing my mother as she had her hands covering her face. As if she could somehow pretend she wasnt aware of my treatment. How could she let this happen to her little girl? I'm mommy's little angel. Mommy's abused angel, but her angel. I shook the thought out of my head. My mother loves me and we both know it's wise to stay out of his way, fighting against my dad wouldn't help.

My father left the room and I let out a wince in pain, holding my sore face. He told me to never whine while he was in the room, so I fearfully never did. I was 9 at the time.

I didn't truly understand what was going on. As I got older my mom told me that the drink daddy has makes him angry, that I was innocent and that we are leaving one day.

I didn't want to leave my dad, at least not at first. I loved him but my feelings of love had started to change. I noticed my mother started to have bruises like mine. The thought of what he could have done to her made my blood boil. Her matted blonde hair on her forehead, the rings around her eyes looked like sinking holes. I remember watching her not talk for days, she just silently rocked back and forth to herself.

I don't really remember much the night my dad killed my mom. I could say that, but then I'd be lying.

I looked a lot like my mother. Her name was Courtney. Our blonde hair went a little over the center of our backs. She had light brown eyes much like myself, though they had lost the life in them over the years . My thirteenth birthday, the day it all happened.

"Kimberly." My mom whispered to me bending over my makeshift bed of sheets. I noticed that her dull eyes were puffy and she held new bruise on her cheek. She stood still for a second and started muttering under her breath. "We have to go." she whispered.

I could tell by her shaking voice she wanted to cry and I couldn't blame her, I wanted to cry with her. The treatment we received all these years from that man, if you could call him that. Constantly cheating on my mother, starving us as a form of punishment.

"Now, please before he comes back!" She urged, breaking my thoughts. Her face twitched and she seemed to be focusing on something until she quickly ran, slammed my door shut and locked it. Following her actions some knocking- more like banging from the door started.

"Mom-" I began to question

"We can talk in the car." she said finishing my thoughts. She ran over to the window trying to open it, then groaned when it didn't open. I watched my mom run around my room frantically looking for something. I grew even more confused. The louder the bangs grew the more frantically she searched. She let out a sigh of relief and gripped my father's old wooden bat.
"Get under your blanket!" She ordered.

"Mom why are we-"

"Please, Kimmy!"

I nodded not needing to be told twice and got under my thick blanket. Trying to keep my thoughts from racing in my head. The shattering of glass made my heart pound. Tears were beginning to spill out of my eyes. "Kim, stay strong." I kept telling myself. "There's nothing to be afraid of."
