How to Escape?

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! ISH. The first day of high school. I'm going into 9th grade and dreading every second of it.

I just moved to L.A. To Los Angeles from Helena, Montana. It's a big change.

My mom always wanted to live in the city but my dad kept her from doing so. He kept the whole family cooped up in the ranch. The only time we left was for school and church.

Honestly I liked the ranch better. Now I don't have any horses. I miss Cheesy, my quarter horse.

When my dad died my mom immediately bought an apartment in L.A. We sold the ranch and the horses.

My dad died in a combine accident. The doctors tried everything. There was no reviving him. We left the day after the funeral.

Our new apartment isn't that big, but it's a good size for two people and a cat.

My cat, Blazer, is the only thing we brought to L.A. besides clothes and valuables.

I get up turning off the alarm. A note sits on the dresser. 'Left for work. I'll be back by 3:30. You know my number if anything goes wrong.
Good luck at school, Love Mom.'

'Good luck indeed' I think. It's a huge school. They must get tons of new students. I grab a pop tart, and my bag. The bus. I see the big yellow vehicle rolling down the road and stopping at the corner.

I run outside barely getting on. I explain to the bus driver that I'm new. He asks me to go back to the seat that has my name.

That's my mom. Making sure everything is set up ahead of time. I look for the seat with my name. Eventually towards the back I find my seat.

Apparently I sit next to some kid named Shawn. 'This is going to be awkward.' I think.

The bus makes another stop. "Why the hell are you in my seat? Get out." A boy standing in front of me says. "Sorry, I sit here now." I look at him and say. "Ugh." He moans and sits down obviously not happy.

The hour long bus ride is awkward. Occasionally I think of saying something, but I never do. This is the beginning of a long, long day.
