"katsuki! katsuki!" y/n called out and he came stomping right by her side.
"what?"
"look it looks like you!" y/n's tiny hands pointed to the hedgehog in the enclosure before them.
"haah? no it doesn't!" he argued, puffing his cheeks out and standing on his tippy toes to see it.
"it does! it looks just like you."
"if i'm that stupid animal, then you're... that ugly-looking bug!" he pointed to the enclosure behind them.
"not even!" y/n looked sort of sad which made katsuki quick change. he felt terrible seeing her with that expression. quickly, katsuki went up to the bug enclosure, picked it up and held it in his hands for y/n to see.
"but look! it's a cool bug! it's ugly, but it's cool."
y/n looked at it with a blank stare.
"no future wife of mine is going to be uncool!"
"really?" she gasped.
"yep! i'm gonna be the number one hero with the coolest most powerful wife! besides me, of course."
he held the bug out to her and while she didn't take it, she gave him a hug.
"i'll be the coolest wife, for sure!"
but the narrative suddenly changed in her head.
y/n watched as her mother's shocked face turned to agony at the police at the door. tears streamed down her face and she quickly thanked the officers and shut the door.
"mommy?" she tugged on her mother's sleeve. "what's wrong? why are you crying?"
the words that left her mouth next were ones that didn't hit her right away. she stood for a moment to process and suddenly burst into fit.
"daddy can't be gone! he's not!"
but she was young and foolish.
he was gone because having a kid and a job was too much for him. because his best friend had died and there was nothing left for him. his family was nothing but a burden.
y/n was nothing but a burden, because why else would he feel the intense need to die?
she was a burden on her mother, too. her grades dropped and she felt awful. she was only in elementary but y/n was determined to be the best for her mom. so her mom wouldn't want to die too. she had to live up to be cool to be cool and powerful to be katsuki's wife, and she had to be healthy and happy for her mom to be too.
and when s/d/n came along, he saw right through it.
one expert liar to another, he saw right through her perfect act.
"only good girls get good grades."
he took advantage of her want to be perfect and he made her do what he wanted.
"good girls don't dress with their stomachs showing."
"good girls aren't sluts, stop acting like one."
"good girls don't cake their faces to look like a clown. stop wearing so much makeup."
"good girls" became the narrative that wrote her entire life. because y/n believed she had to make the people in her life happy to stay.
"good girls date good students."
"good girls don't come home with hickeys."
as she got older, she recognized his behavior as manipulative. though, just because she realized it didn't mean she was invincible to it. because the idea in her head stuck that she had to be good to keep the people in her life from leaving.
it's why she got so upset when katsuki told izuku to kill himself.
not only would that discredit all of efforts to keep him, but she saw the anger in katsuki's eyes that matched her step-dad's.
she wanted to be the perfect wife for him, she wanted to be powerful in his eyes, but telling izuku to kill himself? she was torn.
it terrified her, but when she found out that katsuki was in a dangerous situation, her obsession with everyone she loved overcame her better judgement.
so she understood he wasn't perfect and everyone had room to grow...except herself.
she was stuck in the mindset of uselessness and constant berating of herself over every mistake, though she would never show it because she has such a desire to be perfect.
"good girls don't take away attention from victims."
"good girls aren't selfish."
were implanted into her mind after the slime villain incident.
she wished she was little again.
when her dad wasn't depressed and her mom was happy. when there was no step dad to make her feel shitty. before she had the need to be perfect and her only care was being herself.
because katsuki already told her she was cool and powerful.
and that was all she needed.
