The loud beeping of an alarm clock shook Wren Hannigan, a seventeen year old moody teen, awake an hour early than it was supposed to. He snapped his eyes open and repeatedly slapped the stop button. He sat up with a yawn and stretched widely.
“Oh, fuck me, ” He exclaimed.
He stood up and felt a cramp creep up his back. His hand moved up his spine with a slight shuffle in his footsteps as he did so. His vision was blurry as he stumbled towards his closet. He opened the door and hissed as he flipped through all of his clothes until he finally pulled out a skirt. There was not a single clean shirt in the entire closet which earned another hiss from Wren.
“Are you serious...?” Wren asked himself until his eyes landed on his sweater that was lying on his futon.
He shrugged as he quickly snatched it up and tugged it on. His skirt was loosely strapped to knee high socks. He exaggerated kicked open his bathroom door and located his black nail polish. while applying the polish, he realized that perhaps he needed to go to the store since he was low on almost everything in view. He walked through his house and grabbed his keys as he marched outside. His ninety year old neighbor, Mr Richards waved at him with a warm smile.
Wren waved back happily and made his way to the driver's side of his car. He unlocked it and got inside with a groan. Once he started it, he fiddled with his phone until Japanese indie music started playing from the speakers. He had an hour until school started, so he decided to swing by the local coffee shop. He got a coffee called “The Local's Favorite” which was, ironically enough, his favorite.
After about thirty minutes, he made it to his school and gathered his things. Without missing a beat, he walked to his first period and sat in his assigned seat with his legs on top of the desk. His teacher, Mrs Wallace, looked at him with a small smile.
“I appreciate your boots, Mr Hannigan, ” She said which made him look at her, “Please keep them on the floor.”
Wren slid his feet down to the ground with an embarrassed chuckle.
“Sorry, I didn't think you'd be here this early, ” He said while pulling out his laptop.
He was granted permission to take notes on his laptop, mainly out of pity, because of his horrible handwriting. His hands were constantly shaking because of how nervous he got around people. He was so focused on taking down notes on their board that he didn't realize that Mrs Wallace was attempting to get his attention. He peered at her and she sighed out of relief.
“I need a favor, ” She said, “I need you to guide our new student.”
“New stud-” Wren was interrupted by a boy he didn't recognize walking through the door.
Wren was taken back by how handsome the boy was. He had short brown hair that was slick back and baby blue eyes plus muscles that seemed to bulge out from the thin shirt he had on.
“New student...” Wren repeated to himself.
Mrs Wallace stood up and walked over to the boy with a smile. She looked at Wren out of the corner of her eye. Wren reluctantly stood up and straightened his skirt with a sigh.
“I'm Wren Hannigan, ” He said while extending his hand to the boy.
“Oh, I'm Bret Gold, ” The boy said as he shook Wren's hand.
Wren noticed that Bret's hand was extremely warm. He felt his cheeks burn as he pulled his hand back. Mrs Wallace continued to talk to Bret and pointed out his seat which was the one that was paired with Wren's. He finally understood what she meant by “guide”. Wren sat back in his seat as the bell rang.
