The ball was soaring high in the cloud filled sky, my gaze never leaving it. The air resistant on the motion of the ball allowed it to land right into Brennan’s hands. He turned the ball in his hands making sure the stitches where right under his fingertips before airing it back to Jake. Back and forth.

My hands traced the pom poms sitting on my lap. Tryout’s for both the cheerleading team and the football are on the first day of high school. Brennan and Jake have been practising all day; however, I’ve only done a few minutes. Sighing, I place the poms on the ground before lying back on the grass. Although I liked cheerleading, my heart wasn’t in it not like the boys were in football.

I ran my hand through my slick pony tail concentrating on the clouds above me. Fluffy, white and care-free. They could be anything they wanted to be and people still liked them no matter what. All I wanted to be was a quarterback for the high school team. Ha. What a joke, like they would let a girl instruct them. Instead, I have to try out for the stupid cheerleading team. Give me a J, give me an O give me a K and an E. What’s that spell? Joke. That’s what I thought about the whole thing; a big fat joke. Being a cloud would be much easier.

“Heads!” called Brennan.

I placed my hands over my face just in time. The ball bounced off my arms, landing a mere metre away.

“Throw it over!” yelled Jake.

Standing up, I grabbed the ball and held it in my hands.

“And who was the genius that threw that one?” I raised an eyebrow.

Both of them pointed at each other. I sighed before airing the ball straight to Brennan, hitting him on the head.

I winced as pain shot through my own skull. Damn, didn’t think that through did I. Brennan must have been thinking the same thing as a smirk grew on his face.

Jake jogged over towards me, placing a hand on my head, “You alright?”

“Hey! It hit me not her!” Brennan exclaimed walking towards us.

Jake let go of his hold on me, running towards Brennan and smothering him in a hug.

“Are you okay baby? Need some ice? I’m sorry, is this what you wanted?”

“Give off me!” he huffed.

“That’s what I thought.”

Jake let go and walked back to his original spot beside me.

“Now back to my original question,” he glared at Brennan. “Are you alright?”

“Couldn’t be better.”

“Good.”

With that he picked up the ball and began throwing it towards Brennan again. Brennan threw the ball back, however, he misjudged the height of it and it flew high above Jake.

“Good one.” He muttered before running off to find it.

He shortly returned with no ball but he did have three guys in tow. They came out of the bushes; one of them had the ball in their hand. What were they doing in there? I thought to myself, causing a small chuckle to escape my lips.

“Nice throw,” the one in the middle said. “Care to learn how to play properly?” he exaggerated the last word.

“Wes, they are no competition for us.” The one on his left laughed.

Brennan walked up to the guy, Wes, so that his face was inches away. “Game on.”

“Three on two, don’t you think that is unfair?” piped Jake.

The three guys looked in my direction. “Why not her?” Wes asked with a laugh. The other two joined in.

I walked over to them and pushed Brennan aside. “Like he said game on.” I crossed my arms to make me seem more bad ass and because I was only wearing a sports bra.

He laughed in my face before the three of them made a huddle. We did the same.

“Right, who’s ready to kick some ass?” I asked.

They made a rule, first to get a touchdown won. Idiots. Brennan hurled me the ball, before he sprinted off down the field. I faked the throw before running down the line. Jake was my blocker and Brennan helped. I didn’t look back once, leaving them coughing in my dust. I reached the try line and threw it down. My arms flew to the air. Safe to say they didn’t see that coming.

“Touchdown!”

Dumbfounded. The three ‘musketeers’ were all dumbfounded. Laughing, I high-fived Brennan and gave Jake a sweaty hug. Wes came up to me afterwards and held his hand out.

“Nice work…” he said shaking my hand, waiting for a name.

“Evans. Sam Evans.” I smirked.

“I’m Wes, this is Kyle and Luke.” They both gave a nod, disappointment still on their faces.

“Never thought a girl could play like that.” said Luke.

“Not just a pretty face.” I shrugged back.

After a few more games and a few passes it was time to head home. The guys weren’t too bad after all once you get to know them. As I picked up my gear I noticed a man leaning on my car bonnet.

“Hey! Who do you think you are?”

“Coach Burns.”
