I look up from my book and sigh. My algebra teacher is going on about her mundane life instead of actually teaching us algebra, yet again.
"What's the answer to number 7?" I hear from my right. I wordlessly pass over my paper to my best friend Heather. "Have you ever tried actually doing the work yourself?" I ask drily, finishing the book and closing it with an eye roll. "Yeah, but I know my answers aren't right." "And how do you know mine are?" I ask, leaning across the aisle and snatching my paper back to hand it to the curly bush of hair behind me that belongs to another best friend, Keaton. He mutters out a thanks, I wave him off, still looking at heather with my eyebrows raised. She scoffs "Please, you're a freaking baby Einstein." "That's true. Can I see your paper after Keaton?" "Yeah sure." I tell Makahla who is my, well I'm not really sure. We're high school girls, it gets confusing.
I lean back across the aisle to continue my conversation with Heather when I hear a sharp voice from the front of the room "Would you band kids please stop disrupting my class?" "Yes Mrs. Holliway." We all say flatly. Yeah we are all band nerds, problem? "What a bitch." I mutter. My friends all reply with nods.
After my paper has pretty much been circulated through half of the class, I get it back and turn it in at Mrs. Holliway's desk. "Thank you Piras." (Weird name I know) I hum absentmindedly as I feel my phone vibrate in my back pocket. I get back to my desk and whip out my phone to check, it's a text from one of my aunts in Greece (long family history story, not worth telling.) The text reads, "Call after school, we have life changing news for you." I lift my eyebrows at that, and replace the phone in my pocket. I sit up and strum my fingers on the school desk. What could that possibly mean? Did a family member die? No,they would contact my mother for that. Then what? What is it?!! The curiosity burns, itches. It makes my leg shake and my fingers tap. All the while a ravenous hunger eating away my insides. what What WHAT IS IT?!! I can't take this, it's only first period!
Damn. I wish I had a pack of gum, a pencap to chew on, a book to read, I would even welcome homework right now, just something to keep my mind from imploding on itself like a star collapsing into a black hole.
The bell rings, snapping me out of my rabid thoughts. I wade through the hallway of vacant minds and idle conversation to second period. But all day I am left with one question, "What could it be?"~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
