' i love you , kuroo . '

the sentence was something to be treasured - after all , it wasn't uttered commonly . sure , bokuto would say it on occasion ( although he stopped saying it completely when akaashi came around - for good reason , he supposed ) , but it wasn't common .

besides , it wasn't as if kuroo wanted someone to tell him that . not as if he wanted someone to express their feelings towards him in such a way .

that mindset was the only thing that kept him going sometimes ; the idea that people didn't need to tell him that he was appreciated . it kept his thoughts empty , which was good for his current occupation . after all , it was signifcantly more difficult to function when you got attached to someone .

he says this as if he wasn't attached to bokuto , akaashi , ushijima . . he was attached to everyone in their little ' party ' , even if they got on his nerves sometimes . namely the likes of nishinoya and oikawa , but the two of them were still good people .

nobody here deserved to be in this situation . nobody here wanted to be in this situation , to be clearer . this was actual torture .

and , to avoid that harsh reality , kuroo distanced his mind from all ideas of love . platonic or romantic - they didn't matter . all that mattered was developing a cure and creating some sort of immunity for the rest of his teammates . even at the cost of his own health , because that had deteriorated long ago .

it was difficult , especially when he had to work with tsukishima . while the male was pliant due to their situation . . it wasn't as if he knew all that much about chemistry . he knew how to mend wounds , but not major ones - that , and definitely had some anger building up within him .

especially after they discovered yamaguchi's body that fateful evening . kuroo could smell the rotting flesh wafting off the corpse . it was almost as clear as the sight of maggots squirming all over his body .

he could also hear tsukishima's pained scream that followed the discovery . memories really were the worst form of torture .
