Chapter 7
"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." – Nelson Mandela

"Why did I let you talk me into this?" I huff as I take an open seat at one of the tables in the malls' food court, my feet cramping from the amount of walking we had been doing.
Chloé playfully rolls her and takes the seat across from me, Nikki next to her. "You're just tired and hungry. We can have a quick bite before looking at a few more places. How long till we have to be at the game?"
We had left the house at 9. Yes, Chloé made me get up this early on a Saturday for freaking dresses. It feels like we've been walking for hours and all we found was a few cute jewellery pieces. Chloé was right though, we are a long couple weeks away from the dance and there were already limited options. I glance at the huge clock on the wall, in the front of the court. "It's half 12 now. And Josh said he has a late game today so it starts at 4."
Chloé sits upright, remembering something. "Shit I forgot, I have to be there earlier, to get my cheer stuff and all that jazz."
"We should be done by then I hope." I tell her. I don't think my legs would be able to deal with more walking.
"Okay so I'm gonna go order us a pizza. Any specifics?" Nikki asks us, getting up from her seat. Chloé and I shake our heads no; we all know she's gonna order an extra large chicken and mushroom pizza, our usual.
"I cannot believe we haven't found anything yet." Chloé says, staring miserably into space. "Ohmigod, we still have to get shoes."
"And don't forget those damn masks. I still don't see the point in this whole masquerade thing." She scrunches up her face. "I almost forgot. But that might not be that difficult, I'm sure you can get cute ones at any costume store."
"True." I shrug my shoulders at her.
Nikki sits back in her seat with a discreet smile and a dazed look on her face. I cough loudly and that seems to get her head out of the clouds. She looks startled, like she forgot we were sitting here. "You okay there Nikki?" I ask her in amusement.
"Yeah all good just thinking about things." She says nonchalantly but her face has a pink tinge to it.
Chloé and I share a look, having our telepathic conversation, must be Mason.
"Oh yeah, the pizza should be done in a few minutes, so I thought I would wait here for a bit."
"So Nikki how's the school choir going?" Chloé asks her.
"Pretty good actually. Remember when the dance committee asked Mason and I to sing a duet at the dance?" She asks, we nod our heads and wait for her to continue. "Well the other day Mrs Adams came in and asked if they could get a few more of us to perform some other numbers at the dance too." Mrs Adams is our schools' principal.
"Oh my gosh, Nikki that's so exciting!" I say excitedly. "But why wouldn't she just get a live band?"
"She wants the students more involved, I think, but I think it's because the school wants a live band without having to pay more than half their, already tight, budget." She shrugs.
"Any idea what you are going to sing yet." Chloé asks her.
"Mason and I still need to talk about that, and then it's all the rehearsals. And I might do a solo, but it's up to Mr Barnet to decide." Mr Barnett was the choir teacher, but he absolutely loved Nikki's voice so I highly doubt he wouldn't give her a solo.
