Chapter Two... Arrested Development, Or Something Of The Sort

I awoke in the morning to the unusual sun glaring through the curtains and near-blinding me as it hit my face. I was startled as I got up in a hurry, walking sleepily to angrily pull the open curtains shut. I then crawled back into the warmth of my bed, only to have someone leap on my bed.

"I was asleep!" I shouted.

"Sleep? What's that?" Great. Aunt Alice, the queen of birthdays, had remembered that I was now seventeen. I barely remembered myself!

"Something I was doing beautifully until you leapt onto my bed!" I groaned, pulling the blankets over my head.

"You woke up to shut the curtains," Alice chimed gleefully. "And yes, your Aunt Alice here can see your every move, including your little discussion with Tamsin last night..." her voice trailed off.

"That was private," I snapped, throwing off the covers and getting up. It was no use arguing with the woman who could see the future... I also possessed that gift, but didn't use it as bribery. Or at all, if I could help it...

"If you don't know this rule now, you never will," Alice sighed. "Nothing is secret in this family. And being one that can BOTH see the future and read the minds of unsuspecting individuals, you should understand more than anybody."

"Not by choice," I sighed, rolling my eyes and walking over to my wardrobe.

"Pick out something that doesn't suggest you're a chain-smoking groupie," Alice said, smiling mischeviously.

"How-- oh, never mind," I muttered harshly.

I pulled on a dress that not only annoyed me, it made me look like some prissy little so-so that attracted the richest, most perfet yet utterly boring guys. Alice approved, but then I pulled a set of black stockings over my legs that matched the grey dress perfectly. I literally felt like I was living in a nightmare! Alice groaned when I accessorized with all of what she called my "trashy" jewellery. I pulled a black scarf around my neck, which probably clashed poorly with my jet black hair.

Not that I cared what I looked like.

Alice then led me out of the room, trying not to comment on my look that I'd created into something that was clearly against her taste. As I made it downstairs, my entire family stood there, even my father, stepmother and my two human brothers.

"Happy birthday!" Everyone shouted at the same time.

I loved surprise parties, and well I managed to not find out about this one. I walked into the crowd, grinning wildly from ear to ear. My whole face had lit up, probably making me more sensible than usual.

"Daddy!" I squealed like a child, rushing over and literally jumping into my father's arms.

"Izzie!" he smiled, wrapping his giant arms around me. "God, I've missed you so much. My little girl's all grown up!"

"I've missed you, too," I smiled back at him lovingly.

"Thanks for coming, Jake," mom smiled, walking over to us. "Izzie's growing up way too fast for me!"

"No worries, Nessie," dad replied. "I thought it would be good to finally get to see her. I mean, she doesn't get out to Miami much, and I hope she will soon, because we have a new surprise for her."
