AN ODE TO A SOLDIER

Winter , summer, day and night
His fragile body is always ready to fight
A thousand stories are carved on his face
Of war, of death and hunger stricken days.

His bones are weak but his heart is strong
trembling lips always enunciating a song
Of courage, of valour and of victory
Of the dark ages and golden history.

He remembers not his mother's name
Bharat mata ki jai! Is what he exclaims
He might be a hundred years old
Yet his baritone is still so bold

Every night he cried for his brothers
Every day his rags are soaked with tears
To him Azad hind fauj was his family
United footsteps made a beautiful symphony

Watching children learn the language of death
His scarred face is filled with dread
"This is not the freedom I fought for,
This is not the nation I hoped for"

He speaks fondly of his old world
Amidst those wrinkled eyes tears swirl
"alone we were a team of roguish weeds
Unified by the saffron we used to bleed"

"The injuries that I bear
Are To me nothing but dear
For they show not the times I lost
Or the times death's path I crossed."

"they show the strength of my country's soil
They are an evidence of all the toil
They show the unparalleled strength of patriotism
To stand up and fight when the world was blazing"

There is no truer love than the one is his heart
His victory outshines every star
His tales makes the stone-cold weep
His opaque eyes hold knowledge so deep

The seeds of patriotism that he has sown
Have flowered into soldiers of stone
His serene face lights up and brightens
With the news of India's illumination

This my children is the story of my life
This fuzzy brain was once sharp as a knife
This unsteady feet withstood gunfire
This withering body never used to tire

As I near my ultimate demise and die
I want none of you to shudder and cry
Praise my mother and her glory
And let my ashes end this story

Let my love and saga guide you
Let my patriotism fuel you
Let my soul and will protect you
For the safety of our nation now rests on your young shoulders!
