On a country farm, several years ago lived a little girl named Katie. She had a beautiful little colt named Sonny. She loved him dearly and spent almost every waking moment she could with him.
One day after school was over she ran to the barn but found his stall empty. Katie looked all around. She could find him nowhere.
She went running to the house to ask her mother about him. Her mother met her in the big old farm kitchen. She asked her mother where her colt was explaining she looked everywhere.
Her mother looked down at her tiny daughter and somehow found the words she had to say. "Katie. Sonny became very ill this morning. We called the vet but even though he did everything in his power to save him, the colt died."
Katie looked up with tears filling her large dark brown eyes. "he died? But I loved him. I don't want him gone. What happens to him now? Does he go to heaven like Grandfather did?" Tears were now streaming down her face.
Her mother sighed, pulled up the big old wooden rocker she had rocked Katie in as a baby. She picked the tiny, tearful girl up, stroked her long brown hair and kissed her forehead.
"I think this is a good time for me to tell you a story that my mother told me when I was young. Katie, once a long time ago there lived a family on a farm much like ours. On this farm lived a boy and his name was JT. He had a horse also and it's name was Sonny. Like you, he loved him with all his heart. His brothers had horses and he helped care for them also.
There came a day when the farm had to be sold. The animals and his horse also. It was a very sad time for the family. JT somehow would have horses again. He didn't know how he just would. The family moved and life went on.
One day a tragedy happened in the family. JT, only a week before his twenty first birthday died. His family was heartbroken. They loved him so much. Everyone was grieving his loss. His mother was really struggling to cope with the loss of her middle son.
One day a long time family friend came to visit JTs mother. She told his mother that she had repeated dreams about him. So frequent that she had to tell her about these dreams.
In the dreams she explained she had been to heaven and in the middle of a beautiful green field was JT. He was wearing his favorite cowboy hat and boots. His silver belt buckle shone in the sunlight. He was brushing a sweet little colt and when he saw her he stopped and gave her a wave a great big grin. His green eyes twinkled. He looked happy. She gave him a huge hug and asked how he was. JT said he was so happy. Up here everyone has a job and the one God chose for him was caring for the horses in heaven. He also greeted the new little ones. He loved them dearly and took very good care of them. He fed and brushed them. He also made sure the little ones got their naps. He seemed to happy and at peace. He finally had all the horses he could want.
Just then a tiny colt came trotting by. He explained he had to get back to work but was glad for the visit. He asked that his family be told that he was fine. He loved them but God had given him a big job and he was doing exceptionally well. He knew his mother would be proud. He gave one last hug and turned and went running after the colt. After this is when the dream ended.
After hearing her friend tell about her dreams of JT. Tears were falling out of her green eyes. Her heart though still aching, somehow felt comfort in this. She thanked her friend for the visit.
So Katie, you see there is someone loving and caring for your horse. I know you are still sad but this might help your heart feel better"
Katie thought for a minute and said, " I am sad but am so glad to know that boy JT is up there. I hope when I get to Heaven I might get to be his assistant"
