I clasped my mom's outstretched hand to hoist myself back up to my feet.
"I don't really care, what do you want?" I asked.
My mom shrugs as we both walk towards the kitchen. She opens the tall refrigerator and glances up and down the shelves,
"We have leftover Chinese," She asks expectantly.
I nod and reach over her to grab my box of rice. After heating it up I sit at the dining room table with my mother across the table.
"So... How're things going with Edward?" Mom asked.
My cheeks heated up at the mention of the tall vampire. I stuttered over my words before mumbling out a,
"It's s'okay," I shoveled a forkful of rice into my mouth.
"Oh, can I go to Port Angeles with him this weekend?" I asked after swallowing my food.
She raises an eyebrow and squints in my direction.
"No hanky panky kid, but I guess I don't mind," She teased.
I only blushed harder before shoveling more food into my mouth.
"Oh Astor, not to go back to Dr. Cullen," I grumbled to myself, "But this one time, he was first at the hospital and these two nurses were staring at him all day." His mom said.
"But after a long day this patient came in and he had a severe drug allergy but while they were staring at Dr. Cullen, they shot him full of that drug!" She exclaimed.
My eyes widened, getting a little more intent on this story.
"Well, he went into anaphylactic shock, and not to toot my own horn but I saved his life," She finished with a smug smile.
I giggled to myself and finished off my box of rice. I stood up and as I walked passed his mom I hugged her in her chair. She smiled warmly at me before turning back to her own food. I tossed the empty box in the trash before bounding up the stairs to my secluded attic.
I all but collapsed onto my bundles of blankets and pillows. Pulling another journal off of the nearby bookshelf I glanced towards the nameplate. It read 'Astoria Halbrooke'. My great aunt Astoria, my namesake, is pushing 100 but is still very spry. She lives on the outskirts of Forks with my grandmother Virginia in the retirement community there.
I opened the tome and began to scan the pages up and down. Astoria had lived in Forks her whole life but it seems she never happened upon the vampires. I grumbled as I put the journal back on the shelf. It looks like I won't get much more on vampires from a Temple's perspective.
I glanced up to the dormer and saw the sunsetting in the distance. I grinned to myself at the warm orange hue of the forest around me. Normally I was up much later, but for some reason tonight the tiredness weighed heavily on my shoulders.
I wandered back downstairs and lifted the folded staircase back into the ceiling. Then I walked towards my own bedroom to snuggle into my own bed. Sleep overtook my body quicker than ever and the darkness overcame me.
-
The blackness was back. I was shrouded in the dark, inky night with a thick layer of fog hiding the floor below me. I took a shaky breath before looking around in the dark. I began to walk around, stumbling over my feet that I couldn't see. Then suddenly in the distance was the woman from before.
Her messy matted hair was more obviously caked with dirt and with leaves and twigs stuck inside. She looked far more put together, albeit still an absolute mess. Her ivory skin was slick with sweat. She huffed and puffed and looked around like a wild animal. She looked less like a ghost, and more like a memory.
Suddenly she dissipated and a speeding figure shot passed. Then again, then again, until it suddenly stopped across the dark landscape. My surroundings took shape with gnarled, old trees shrouded in fog. The figure looked at me and grinned.
His dark hair was chopped short. His sharp, evil eyes were black with hunger. He had a frayed gray button up that was open in the front. His chiseled, marble body shining through the dark fabric. His low rise blue jeans were frayed on the end and he wore no shoes on his feet.
He took a step back, entering a pouncing position. His teeth glistened as he grinned wildly at me, before shooting forward like a bullet.
-
I awoke with a gasp. I took deep breath after deep breath to calm myself down from the dream. I can't figure out who the man or woman were. While the man was obviously a vampire, the woman seemed human. What connected them?
I looked towards my digital alarm clock and it read '6:03'. While it was significantly earlier than normal for me, it's never too early to get ready.
Friday mornings were my favorite, so after a shower and brushing my teeth I cracked open a book before my clock hit the seven o'clock mark. Then I put the book back on my shelf and wandered downstairs. The smell of bacon and eggs wafted through the whole house so I knew my dad was hard at work. He has to be at work the latest, yet he leaves the earliest due to his lengthy commute. He would be leaving as soon as I got downstairs, I'm sure.
"Hey bud," Dad grinned before rushing passed me through the arch of the kitchen.
He kissed the top of my head as he headed towards the front door. The bacon and eggs sat fresh on the counter for me to eat. Which I scarfed down in seconds.
I made a mental note to myself to ask Edward about the vampire of my dream. The sun shone bright through the dining room windows, a very uncommon occurrence here in Forks. I grumbled to myself, knowing the Cullens weren't making it to school today.
My mom sped through the kitchen and dining room. Kissing the top of my head, grabbing an apple, and speeding out of the garage side door.
Working as a doctor was always unpredictable. Now alone in my house, I decided now was as good a time as ever to make it out of the house. So I started on my way to school.
