As I was walking along a narrow dark road, I passed by an old lady whom I noticed because of her big shaggy clothes . She is quietly standing on the footsteps of a small cabin while unusually rocking her head. And even though it was dark, the dim light coming from the inside of the cabin made me see her trembling hands. I guess it was probably because of the cold summer night, and probably because of something else.
But I did not mind.
I continued my walk which seemed too long for a short path when I heard a small humming. It was so unique yet beautiful and captivating. So I stopped to search for the source of this entrancing music.
I just had to.
I turned my head towards the old lady to make sure if it is coming from her. But I could not see her face. She seems to be too distracted to sing. I continued my walk believing that it was coming from somewhere else. Although I know it is too loud to be coming from a far, I decided to forget about it.
And then, the humming stopped.
I do not know why but I felt a yearning from deep inside me. I wanted to hear those melodies again. I needed to know where it is from. So I bravely walk towards the old lady. I felt a cold breeze and decided to hug myself with my weak arms. It seems to be getting weaker not because of the cold but because I am terrified. But my curiosity drove me to continue my steps, my deep yearning is far more powerful than my fear.
I...just had to know.
As I was getting close to her, she began screaming,
"STAY AWAY FROM ME YOU MONSTER!"
That is when I saw her wrinkled face filled with tears. I am terrified but she is much more. She is pointing at me with her hands aggressively shaking. Her hands with blood dripping all over the ground. It was dark for me to notice but I can see that there is something behind her laying on the ground. It seems to be swimming on the blood. I forced myself to clear my vision of this thing with a familiar form. I froze when it struck me. It is not something but someone.
"AHHHHHHHH" Lily has this old habit of interrupting my story with her practiced scream "Liliana! Why do you always scream at the wrong time?! The story's getting better", nagged Leila crossing her arms with a posture of a strict Madame.
"Did that really happen to you Aiah? It is such a long story for a short walk. So long and so boring", grunt Lily.
Lily and Leila are my twin cousins whom I have been meeting during my free time. Leila do like hearing my ordinary to out-of-the-world stories always making sure to not miss every part of it. When she does, our time will be filled with questions and a deeper investigation of many people's fictional lives. Lily on the other hand just wants to make fun of her sister. She enjoys disturbing her sister's peaceful world with her little teasing and loud screaming, well mostly screaming.
They might have contrasting attitude, but they do love each other's company. They cling to each other all the time, especially after their tragic lost. They became dependent on each other after our grandmother's death. Their parents have to work outside the border, so our grandmother has to be the mother and father for the both of them. She is a fine lady who seems to not be affected by the long stretch of time. Her death is the very opposite of her lively and graceful personality. Since then, I always make sure to check on them every time I am allowed to go out. My short time of liberty is full of dealing with two kids: telling them stories, helping them with their notes, playing with them, everything a babysitter would do.
