I find myself humming over the radio on the way home from work, the snow makes driving a little challenging. Instead of going home I take a short detour, Mark and Rina have been asking to see me and I guess I owe them an explanation for why I’ve not been responding to them this weekend. I feel bad but a little white lie never hurt anyone? If they find out about Glen I’m sure there’ll have more than just something to say about it. I’ve been through my fair share of lectures from the two of them and I’d rather avoid it. So as it’s Glen’s last couple of days coming up after Christmas, we made it a point to create a roos a ‘two day seminar about life after rehab’ separate hotel rooms obviously.
“Evie! Hello love, how’re you?” Rina greets me, her long wavy blonde hair flies around waywardly.
“Grand, it’s bloody freezing out here! Any chance of a cuppa?” I ask, settling myself down by the fire. Where Mark soon joins us;
“Alright Evie? What’s been going on, we’ve not heard from you lot all weekend?” His eyebrow rises along with Rina’s I know that judgmental look anywhere. It’s not out of place or without cause but I go along with the fabrication anyway.
“Yeah sorry, we went to a two day seminar thing. It was so boring, about life after rehab. I dunno why I had to go but it saved me from sitting on my arse all weekend.” I laugh, they seem to buy it and change the subject to the holidays
“What are we doing for Christmas this year?” Mark asks looking at me over his cup of tea
“Come over to mine? I’ve never cooked a family dinner before so why not?”
They both look understandably surprised, cooking has never really been my forte but why not give it a go.
“Okay, as long as you don’t mind the kids running riot! Just don’t make us sick on Christmas Evie!” Mark laughs ruffling my hair.
“Shut up you. It’ll be fine! I’ll make Glen help me , he always makes me cook it’s about time he pulled his weight!” I laugh along getting up to leave
“So that’s a deal. I’ll come round tomorrow to sort the details! Thanks for the cuppa!” I smile giving them both a hug before returning to my car.
What did I get myself into?
“Glen!” I holler through the house, he’s not far. Sitting at the table he looks over papers, a black pair of glasses sit on his nose, it must be important if he’s quiet. He didn't even notice me come in;
“Oh, hello love. I need to speak to you in a sec, how was your day?”
What would he need to talk to me about? It sounds important whatever it is. I mumble something about my day and sit at the table opposite him, watching him sign papers and put them into envelopes. Then he brings out another wad of paper;
“Jesus that’s like a book. What’s that about?” I ask but he signs the bottom and puts it away quickly.
“Ah, you’ll have to wait and see love. Mark text me and said you’ve decided to cook Christmas dinner for everyone? Is that wise?” he laughs, removing his glasses he rubs his eyes and takes a drink of tea before leaning back in his chair.
“Yeah, yeah. Mock away! You’re not getting out of it, you’re cooking with me!”
“Who says I was staying for Christmas? I have family too you’know!”
Oh.
“Please don’t abandon me on Christmas!” I beg, laughing though
“Um no, but I kind of wanted to propose something.. you might not go for it but how does my parents coming here for Christmas sound?”
