I was looking at some ships and came across some Sirius x lily ones...
and honestly? I see it!
James and Sirius' personalities were carbon copies of each other! Though, I see Sirius as more of a charmer and Jily shipper.
For my theory, he decided to 'date' lily to try and spark something in James to get him to hurry up and confess. Lily was aware of the plan and went along with it. But during this duration of them 'dating' he slowly fell in love with her and was torn knowing the reason he did this was to get her and his best friend together, and both were obviously in love with each other.
So putting his friends wants before his, he tried to push those feelings aside. Always getting upset when James glared at him when he saw the two 'lovers' on a 'date'.
Getting upset when James and Lily confessed to each other
Getting upset when he saw them get married
And totally broken once he heard that they were expecting a child
I you've noticed, if James' named is mentioned, so is Lily's (except when he's talking about the marauders). That's him trying to remind himself that not only is the love of his life dead, but was smitten with his best friend, and know the only thing to remember her by are Harry's eyes.
