It takes only a second to die

Fire.

That is all that I could see, or sense, fire everywhere. I didn't even feel the arrow which penetrated my heart.

All I could see was the fire. The all-consuming fire. Eating at my family home. Eating at everything I ever knew and loved. All my memories, hopes and dreams, were in that fire. And I watched them turn into ashes. And as I fell on my knees, I did not feel scared about the fact that I was going to leave this world. All I felt was the sensation of the all-consuming fire. And the warmth it brought with it.

Then, I felt conscious again. Was this the afterlife? It had to be. Instead of the heat of fire, I only felt a pleasant spring breeze here. As I slowly opened my eyes, I panicked. It was all black. Everything around me was black. Was this it? Would I spend an eternity in this void? Slowly forgetting everything about myself, and descending into madness? I started to hit around me, screaming. And then suddenly, I noticed somebody looking at me. I quickly turned around, but saw nothing but blackness.

"Is somebody there?!" I did not manage to hide my frustration as I shouted the words, tears rolling off my eyes.

"Depends on what you mean with somebody." A bored voice responded.

I stood there dumbfounded. "What does that even mean?!" I instantly regretted having shouted that. It was silent for a few seconds, before I suddenly felt the touch of a hand on my shoulder. I quickly turned around, and stood face to face with a... girl?

"Aww... You're no fun! I tried to act like some sort of cool spirit, and you completely ruined it!" She said with a pout. It all became too much for me, and I collapsed to the ground. As I was passing out, I could hear a sigh, and the words: "Did I really pick the right guy?"

When I came to my senses again, I was sitting on a chair. The girl was sitting on another chair right in front of me. She was wearing something like a priestess outfit, and had blonde hair. I had never seen anyone with blonde hair in my town. All the people with blonde hair lived in other parts of the world. She noticed I had come to my senses, and she quickly clapped her hands together: "Perfect! You're awake again!" I quickly asked what I wanted to know: "What is this place?" The girl gave me an angry look, it seemed she didn't like to be interrupted.

She looked angry for a few seconds before sighing and standing up: "This is the Checkpoint. Whenever a person dies, that person comes here to be assigned a new live." She said casually as if it were nothing...

I just sat there dumbfounded. "Yes, you died. An army of a nearby warlord raided your town, and murdered everyone you knew. But do not worry, they will be reincarnated too!" I remained silent. The girl noticed I needed some time to process this, and waited patiently. After a few minutes I asked: "So what now? Will I just be reincarnated, and forgot about everything I ever did?" The girl grinned. "Nope! You see, your world isn't the only world. There are many different worlds, with various levels of technology. Currently the world with the highest level of technology is threatening to destroy itself from paranoia and technological advancements. The politicians running the important nations on the world are all former soldiers, wishing to deal with problems using the gun, instead of the pen."

I looked confused. "What does this have to with me?" I asked, still not understanding anything she was saying. "It's simple really. I want you to become the leader of one of the nations in that world, and make sure they do not destroy themselves."

...I just died... And she is asking me to save a world I have never even heard of before?!

"What?! No! Just reincarnate me to my own world!" I shouted while clenching my fists and stepping forward. The girl suddenly looked offended: "Do you realize who you're talking to? I am a god you know!" She said angrily, not even bothering to stand up.

I was silent for a few seconds... Not properly processing what this all means... It seems she had expected an answer, as her face grew even more irritated.

"You want to go back to your own world? Fine! You'll be a slave that is raped and dies at the age of thirty! You want that?" She asked...

"...No..." I said truthfully. That did not sound pleasant, even by the standards of a man who had just been burnt alive... It seems that this was the answer the gir-, no, god had wanted, as her irritated look made place for one of satisfaction.

"Good! Then that settles it, you'll rin for the 1960 presidential elections of the United States of America!" Wait wait wait! What?! What even is a presidential election?!

"What?! I don't even know what those words mean!" The god looked as if she suddenly remembered something important: "You're right... Well, I'll give you a quick rundown of Earth's history!" She said happily.

She clapped her hands twice, and it went black.
