i saw april before class the next day. i walked up to her, wanting to ask her something.

"hey april!" i said cheerfully.

"hey." she replied.

"yesterday was fun." i said, trying to make conversation to build up to the question.

"i guess."

okay, that didn't really work. i guess i'll just ask.

"you're not a lesbian, right?"

"what? no, of course not." she replied with a scowl.

"oh, okay. i was just checking, not because i'm homophobic, but because shirley is, and if you were a lesbian i was gonna warn you."

april seemed to stiffen at that, raising her voice, "i'm not homophobic either. i'm just not a lesbian, okay?"

"yeah, okay. i'm sorry if i..." i began

"i have to get to class." she interrupted as she began to walk to class.

yeah, i know. we have the same class.

i saw her at lunch later that day.

"hey, i'm sorry if i offended you earlier." i said, sitting down at the table she was at.

"it's fine. i wasn't offended. if i was it would mean i'm either homophobic or a lesbian, and i'm neither."

it was hard to tell if she was mad still mad or not.

"so...you're not mad?"

she shook her head, "no, stupid. i was never mad."

"good!" i said with a smile, "i just thought i'd check."

"well, no need, because everything is fine."

"okay, great."

but things still felt awkward, or at least more awkward than usual.

"how's your day so far?" i asked, breaking the silence.

"fine." she replied, not even looking at me.

she stayed quiet for a few seconds, then spoke, "so is that how you hit on girls? just go around asking if they like girls or not?"

i froze, "i wasn't..."

she kept going, "it's good thing you're pretty."

i could feel my cheeks growing red, "you think i'm pretty?"

"duh. you're fucking gorgeous. it doesn't take a lesbian to see that."

i smiled, still blushing, "well, thank you."

"ew, don't thank me. that makes it weird."

i nodded and looked down at the table, still smiling.

by the time i made my way to study group that afternoon my cheeks were almost aching from smiling.

i guess i'm just not used to compliments.

"someone's happy." shirley said in her cheery tone.

i shrugged, still smiling, "yeah, i guess."

"so, who is he?" britta asked, sitting back ready to listen.

i scoffed, "there is no 'he'. why do you think there's a he?"

"oh, come on, annie. i saw how you used to act around you-know-who, but you said you were over him." britta said.

"yeah, annie, who is it?" april said in a slight teasing tone.

i shook my head, "there is no he. i'm just happy, alright?"

i looked at april, who was smirking, but looked back at her notebook.

"okay, everyone, let's stop teasing annie and get to studying." jeff said, opening his notebook.

"thank you, jeff." i said.
